what does "affective" mean in this dx'd?

Recommended Posts

Affect refers to emotions/moods and mood disorders are also known as affective disorders. Basically, it means there is a more/less persistent alteration in affect. The affect can be negative (depressive disorders), positive (hypomania) and so on. The main idea is that the moods a person experiences have "normal" variations, but someone with an affective disorder has moods that are extreme, inappropriate, or incongruent with life events. In depression this can also be seen as a "flat affect" or general lack of emotional expression/feelings/etc.
