Dx 296.90

Recommended Posts

I was looking to see what my next appointment date was from the receipt that I got the other day, and it said I was 296.90. Now, first, looking it up wrong, I think 291.9, I thought I was an old senile man, but such is not the case. But 296.90 is Unspecified Affective Psychosis. I think that sounds worse. I actually am a tad ignorant on the whole psychosis part.

Not happy.

Cheer up, when I look up the codes I see 296.90 is "Mood Disorder NOS".

For the record, I'm 296.60 "Bipolar I Disorder Most Recent Episode Mixed".

Also please remember that diagnostic codes are principally for insurance companies. Good doctors don't treat codes, they treat people.

Here are my references:

Yeah, it's now "Mood Disorder NOS" (DSM-IV) or "Unspecified Episodic Mood Disorder" (ICD-9). Maybe you were looking at an old version of the DSM or ICD. "Psychosis" used to be used in a looser sense than it is now, to mean any biologically-based mental illness, regardless of whether there was anything that would be currently called psychosis (delusions, etc.)
