just got put on provigil for sleepiness and concentration help. I already take Cymbalta twice a day with klonopin as needed for anxiety and ocd.

Is Proviiigil like the stimulants?

It's like the stimulants in that it's supposed to increase wakefulness. However, one of the working theories about how it works is that it works more directly on the neurons that regulate sleep - search on "orexin" and "modafinil" - than the stimulants. It effects may require an unimpaired alpha-one-adrenergic system ( says Provigilweb,) but that might be some half-bakery on the explanations front.

Unlike the medications formally classified as "stimulants" there isn't good evidence of increased dopamine or noradrenaline release or even inhibited reuptake. That's not great news for ADHD, but if your ADHD meds (or other meds?) make you sleepy this might be what you need.

Based upon what I've heard, Provigil is akin to the bright bathroom light in your eyes when you get up in the morning.. whereas, stimulants are like the cup of coffee you have later on with an added concentration boost. For that reason, some people take both a stimulant and Provigil.

I know I can fall right asleep on my stimulant. I don't think that would be the case with Provigil.

...works more directly on the neurons that regulate sleep

I know it regulates the body's ability to stay awake during the day, but is there any indication that it could actually 'help' the stages of sleep when you're..well, asleep? Just curious..

Holy crap monkey. I took half a pill of this today and was more disoriented, unfocused, and depressed then I have been in many years. Yes, it was on prescription. It made me depressed as shit. Definitely nothing like what I was expecting or, obviously, hoping for.

Anyone have any ideas about what, chemically, could be causing those feelings? From that little paragraph at provigilweb, it seems that it may increase GABA. Which would make sense in that it may be why I felt so stupid and depressed today: perhaps it acts similarly to alchohol in that it is a depressant because it reduces neuronal transmission.

Majorly bummed about my reaction to this med. I will give it a longer trial when im off work for a few days but dam was I majorly depressed today, dangerously so.

Olmifon (adrafinil - parent medication to modafinil and possibly harder on the liver) didn't seem to make it too hard to go to sleep on time, but I haven't looked into the literature as to whether it adversely affects sleep structure.

I have a niece who is narcoleptic and Provigil worked wonderfully for her. Continuously awake during the day, slept at night. She was more productive than she had been in some time. She experienced weight loss, etc...

She d/c the med as she didn't want to be on meds for life. She spent a LOOONG time on the couch after. Jokingly, I asked if she had any left... ;)
