OreoKitty
I have a friend who takes trazadone and prozac. She has been diagnosed with lymes disease. Now she is taking 2 antibiotics. I know one of the meds is doxicycline. Would these lessen the effects of the antidepressants? We looked on aidsmeds.com but it didn't say anything. She's been miserable, but it could be that she's just tired of being sick. I thought I'd pick everyone's brain and to see if anyone has any personal experiences. Thanks, Oreo

I know one of the meds is doxicycline. Would these lessen the effects of the antidepressants? We looked on aidsmeds.com but it didn't say anything. She's been miserable, but it could be that she's just tired of being sick. It depends on exactly which antibiotics she is on. Some compete for the same liver enzymes as certain psych meds, most do not. Wikipedia claims that doxycycline is an enzyme inducer - it speeds up metabolism of medications by one or more P450 isoenzymes. CAT.INST publishes an abstract where the opposite finding was observed. I'll go with the published results and suggest that the doxycycline may elevate circulating trazodone levels (P450 3A4,5,6 substrate lockhart) No telling what the unknown does. AirMarshall
I ran an interaction check on www.drugs.com which I think does a better job with psych meds and found no interaction between the antibiotic and the psych meds. Since there are no known mechanism for interaction, we should not expect any. Do note that antibiotics are often not the benign drugs we tend to think of. They can be very harsh on the body, particularly when taken at high dosages and for long periods in combinations, as your friend is doing for Lyme disease. Both Lyme and the antibiotics can be the cause of your friend feeling crappy and any doctor or pharmacist will tell you it is not surprising. I hope your friend is successful in clearing the Lyme quickly. Regards, a.m. [edit; Nullo and I crossposted. I defer to his comments about possible enzyme effects.]
Velvet Elvis
Running a fever can cause all kinds of emotional wackiness in and of itself.
Glen
Do a Pub-med search on 'antibiomania'. In particular, fluorine based antibiotics (fluoroquinolones) should be used with caution.
