Pillboxfox
What mood stabiliser helped you the most? Lithium, Depakote, Lamictal, Topamax? I'm curious. In my case Lithium seems to be a winner. PBF

CrazyLee
depakote got me out of a bad spot. Topamax is doing a good job so far. Those are the only two I have taken so far.
confused
Depakote worked very well for me, but I gained weight on it. Now, I take lamictal.

Zippy
Lithium worked the best but after awhile my kidneys rejected it. Trileptal/Topamax combo is working second best for me now, with an AP and AD and benzo in the mix. This has been the longest success for me. Croix
Topamax made me lovable again. I wish I could have stayed on it, but I lost so much weight, it made me sick. I'm starting Lamictal now. I haven't been on it long enough to form an opinion yet. I hope it works as good at the topamax did. Croix
meg
am I allowed to answer as a boring unipolar depressive? lamictal was the first thing to finally, completely, kick my depression's butt. am closing in on my first two stable, 'in remission' (! me? craziness.) months and although it has a good foundation with my wellbutriin and zoloft-- lamical was the one that really DID something. cheers to meds that work: may we all have wonderful cocktails, meg

We are very encouraged by the glowing reports from those it works for. Now, if he can titrate to a sweet spot before I kill him... things will be grand! SunshineOutside
Hi PillboxFox, Thanks for the great topic! The combination of Lithium & Lamictal. The addition of Lamictal to the Lithium quickly effectively acted on my long-term treatment Bipolar II Depression. Hooray finally!!! Hopeful and effective hunting to you! I'm on neurontin now. its working a little bit. its keeping me from deep dark depressions. Now I need something to curb the mania... Artchick
I love love love love Lamictal. I hate hate hate hate Topamax. I was in a complete fog and always so thirsty. I hate hate hate hate Depakote. I gained 30 lbs and a bunch of my hair fell out. I have no side effects with Lamictal and it really controls the bipolar symtoms. Just try to take my Lamictal away from me- it isn't ever going to happen.

HELP! edited to add: it isnt even an AC so why is it in this forum? or am i worng again. im sorry. im just SO SO SO confused!

HELP! edited to add: it isnt even an AC so why is it in this forum? or am i worng again. im sorry. im just SO SO SO confused! It's definitely an anticonvulsant. It's been used for that for longer and wasn't approved for BP until almost ten years after it was for seizures. Anyway, from what I understand, very few things work on both depression and mania equally well. Most of them tend to work better on one end than the other usually, with a few exceptions like lithium, which is pretty good at preventing both. Many of the things lumped under the "mood stabilizer" label seem to be the opposite of Lamictal and work better on mania than depression, which could have something to do with why they often get paired with an AD. Of course, that doesn't mean that just because something usually works better at one end than the other it won't necessarily do enough on its own. Depending on what's going on in your particular brain, "sometimes not quite as effective" might still be "plenty effective for you personally" with any luck.
