Topamax made me lovable again. I wish I could have stayed on it, but I lost so much weight, it made me sick. I'm starting Lamictal now. I haven't been on it long enough to form an opinion yet. I hope it works as good at the topamax did.

am I allowed to answer as a boring unipolar depressive?

lamictal was the first thing to finally, completely, kick my depression's butt.

am closing in on my first two stable, 'in remission' (! me? craziness.) months and although it has a good foundation with my wellbutriin and zoloft-- lamical was the one that really DID something.

cheers to meds that work:

may we all have wonderful cocktails,

I'm not anxious, I'm just terribly, terribly alert!

Sorry, I just read that and I know it's silly but it struck me as hysterically funny at this very moment.

I appreciate the laughs anywhere I can find them. ;)

haha...yay! I had just seen that about two minutes ago and was giggling all alone at my computer. so glad you mentioned this just as I was thinking it, it's a great quote.

How fortuitous- as i see you are doing great on lamictal which is what I came here to research for hubby.

We are very encouraged by the glowing reports from those it works for. Now, if he can titrate to a sweet spot before I kill him...

things will be grand!

Hi PillboxFox,

Thanks for the great topic!

The combination of Lithium & Lamictal. The addition of Lamictal to the Lithium quickly effectively acted on my long-term treatment Bipolar II Depression. Hooray finally!!!

Hopeful and effective hunting to you!

Best wishes,

I love love love love Lamictal.

I hate hate hate hate Topamax. I was in a complete fog and always so thirsty.

I hate hate hate hate Depakote. I gained 30 lbs and a bunch of my hair fell out.

I have no side effects with Lamictal and it really controls the bipolar symtoms.

Just try to take my Lamictal away from me- it isn't ever going to happen.

It's definitely an anticonvulsant. It's been used for that for longer and wasn't approved for BP until almost ten years after it was for seizures. Anyway, from what I understand, very few things work on both depression and mania equally well. Most of them tend to work better on one end than the other usually, with a few exceptions like lithium, which is pretty good at preventing both. Many of the things lumped under the "mood stabilizer" label seem to be the opposite of Lamictal and work better on mania than depression, which could have something to do with why they often get paired with an AD.

Of course, that doesn't mean that just because something usually works better at one end than the other it won't necessarily do enough on its own. Depending on what's going on in your particular brain, "sometimes not quite as effective" might still be "plenty effective for you personally" with any luck.
