Australia has a new government!

Recommended Posts

yeah we do! voted in yesterday

for 11.5 years we've had a very conservative government: racist, homophobic, george-bush-arse-kissing, un-environmental...

We've got a better one now, "Labor", which is more centre-left - the same economically, but compared with the Liberal party they have better social policy and are pro-workers rights, more progressive on the environment. Not a whole lot more on mental health which is unfortunate as our public system needs it. Let's just say this party ain't perfect, but it's better than what we just had.

My entire adult life has been lived under these smug bastards, so I'm so happy they are gone gone gone. Our prime minister even lost his own seat to a Labor candidate! I think that's the best thing about it!

In our political history, Labor have certainly made some good choices for Australia. I am a particular fan of the Whitlam government. But this Rudd govt. will need to prove themselves for me to feel less anxious about it all. And I swear, if interest rates go up - I will go postal! I am barely managing my morgage as is.

Gah.

I hope this is a good thing. Bring on future prosperity, I say.

I say too.

re: interest rates. I think there will be more rises. You just had to hear the Reserve Bank chiefs saying that with all the government spending planned then it's more likely to rise. That said, Labor proposed to spend less than Liberal.... will have to wait and see.

I wasn't around for Whitlam, but you hear his echo in our social policy these days. It would have been good to be alive just to see that period, when it all changed.

Well may we say God save the Queen!

Because NOTHING will save the Governor-General!

- I still love seeing that video of him saying that on the steps of parliament after getting sacked.

I am so happy for you! I just hope the United States will follow suit or at the very least stop voting Republican (and definitely not for Ron Paul either). The working class (formerly working) need a break here. 26 years of Republican rule has been devastating.

I hope the US does too. I also hope it gets some gun control, not just domestically, but internationally. That would really piss Charlton Heston off eh.

Here, I like what my dad said yesterday about our government: "Let's hope they just don't fuck things up!"
