I have a tendency to pack on the pounds with any of these meds. I would think at the very least you would stay the same, but what do I know... dangergirl Posted December 4, 2007 Share Posted December 4, 2007 I can't blame my weight gain on Topa per se, but I have gained quite a bit of weight - I blame it on booze and not paying attention to what I'm eating. jen5276 Posted December 4, 2007 Author Share Posted December 4, 2007 I can sympathize. I was on Topamax for about 3 months last year, and at the same time, I was weaning off Lexapro. I thought I would have lost some weight, but the pounds were packing on like crazy. When I saw my office's holiday party photos, I almost died. I looked HUGE! I decided at that point I wanted to go the no-med route so I've been med-free since the beginning of year (except for Xanax which I only use about 3-4 times per week). I have lost some weight, but not much. It's very frustrating. I really just have to get into working out again, but it's very hard to get in the groove again. I have been feeling very down lately but I attribute that to the holidays and the fact that I lost two very close family members in the last few years around this time. I hope it passes. crazynotstupid Posted December 5, 2007 Share Posted December 5, 2007 You can't expect all meds to follow "normal" profiles...hell my fiancee was on 30 mg of zyprexa and still bitching about not being able to sleep! I saw a study showing an average of 8.8 lpound loss for topa. But YMMV. Ceertainly lifestyle factors, drinking, other meds come into play. If all you want is magic weight loss there's always lipo or amputation, of course. My only real "meaty" thought here is that topa is extremely unlikely to, in and of itself, cause weight gain. When I started on Topamax, I also started on a very low dose of Seroquel (50mg/day at night to sleep) so there's that to consider. Before being on Topamax, I was gaining very rapidly and consistently (while on both Zyprexa and Depakote at the same time). When I went on Topamax (or more likely when I went OFF Z and Depakote), that gain stopped, but I did NOT lose anything at all. For a short time, my weight stayed the same. Then I very verly slowly gained a very small amount, and my weight stabilized again. Then I went on a diet and started losing a lot of weight from the diet. A couple of times I've gone off my diet plan and gained back some lbs; as soon as I went back on plan, I've dropped those lbs. So yes I have gained weight while on Topamax, but I didn't and don't think it was caused by the drug. I also didn't lose anything going on Topamax either though. Guest SEB Posted June 29, 2008 Share Posted June 29, 2008 I have had a problem with gaining weight with Topamax and it appears to be directly tied to the dose. The only other medication I am currently on is Birth control. When I first started Topamax at 25mg, I lost 5 pounds in a week. Then I upped my dose to 50mg. Bad mistake. Along with some serious side effects (depression), I also gained weight. I gained back the weight I had just lost, plus some. I have now dropped my dose back down to 25mg. My weight it back to what it was before starting. I believe that the higher dose may have caused my body to go into starvation mode. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
scarlet_faery Posted June 29, 2008 Share Posted June 29, 2008 The first time I was on Topamax I lost a ton of weight. I was so proud of myself too. Then the doctors fucked with my meds and I gained all and then some back. I then went back on Topamax and my weight has basically stayed the same for years. No gaining or losing.
