additional stimulant for evening class?

Recommended Posts

I have one evening class next semester. It is going to be an awesome class. But, I will not be able to follow anything in lecture without a stimulant. I take Adderall during the day already. Do pdocs ever prescribe an additional stimulant for infrequent use? This would be once a week for 14 weeks.

i don't know about for evening classes, but when i was losing focus and getting zonked out in the afternoon at work, my pdoc upped my dosage and had me take another 10mg dexedrine in the afternoon.

if i know i'm going to need to be up late for some reason, i will sometimes take it a bit later in the day. i do, however, take the second dose most days. (i skip it on the weekends for the most part. and there are occasions when i don't take my afternoon dose, even when i'm working. like ... if i want to be able to sleep the second i get home without any more meds?)

so ... yeah, the circumstances are a bit different. but i take the afternoon dose to prevent the oh-so-hard-to-hide space case/attention span of a gnat syndrome that used to hit me about 3pm every day.

When I was taking adderall, and it wasn't lasting long enough in the day, my pdoc had no problem prescribing a second daily dose to get me through.

similar experience here-

except I was taking one 20mg adderall xr per day and I still had work and an evening class and all of my homework to do and the xr was wearing of at 2pmish-- didn't work well for me. next appointment I asked if there was any way to change the dose or spread it out so it could be helpful during work *and* school so I didn't have to choose between them.

he just prescribed 20mg 2-3x a day for me (a lot, I know, I have never needed or wanted to use that third dose) long days I tend to get through fine with one in the morning at like 8am and then a half a dose in the afternoon.

most docs aren't quite as liberal with the stims as mine (he tends to give me the reigns within what he prescribes..and it's also a 2ndary treatment for my depression) but it usually isn't a problem if you explain why it would be helpful to you, and that it is probably temporary.

worth asking! good luck with the class ;)

My doc was very good about adding extra Adderall for night classes--hey, when you're the teacher, it's really bad to fall asleep or space out, and it did happen a couple times before I started taking an additional dose late in the day when I had a 7-10 pm class.

my doc gave me Adderall XR for the day, but *also* prescribed be Adderall IR for when it started to ware off. I think that my body got used to the Adderall, though, so I just recently switched the Adderall IR to Focalin...

I just wanted to make sure it wasn't something totally weird...

haha, I know the feeling. I know it can be odd asking about stimulants with some doctors..my first pdoc made me feel like a junkie for even looking at the ADD pamphlet in the waiting room.

it's a normal request and should be fine.

just make sure not to use the following words and you'll be golden:

speeeedy* (as in: 'quick, quick, I need to be more..')

upper* (as in: 'dude, that's a bummer...you could use a good..')

study-drugs/studybuddies (as in: '..are hot in the local college black market right now')

amphetamiiiiines* (as in: 'hurry up deal-err-doctor, I need my fix of..')

words displaying a star * are especially bad to use if you happen to be shivering, sweating, are carrying a tarnished spoon, or have a home-depot shopping bag with some surgical tubing flopping out.

just some tips ;)

  • 4 weeks later...

Don't feel weird. My pdoc lets me take what I want if total is under a certain amount, and she's never made that amount less than I claim to need. I don't really LIKE to take much more than I need. Doesn't feel good.
