mel1
okay, i have a strange question about lamictal. I stopped taking bc pills because it was determined that they were causeing me to have frequent migraines. As soon I stopped, i have not had a migraine since. I know taht when bc pills and lamictal are taken together, the amount of lamictal absorbed is decreased, sometimes significantly. Does that make sense that when bc pills are stopped, the amount can increase significantl;y.. I ask this because I was thinking (someone- quick-break out the fire extinguisher!) . my pdoc had me increase my lamictal dose from 300-350. Yesterday, i did this and felt extremely weird and overmedicated. i know it's only been one day, but i'm wondering if stopping bc pills could make my lam. levels increase to the point i was taking too much. I have been having unexplained nausea for months now and have undergone several diff. expensive tests without ins. they found nothing wrong with me and want me to get a gall scan, which costs 800$. Could excess lamictal be causing the nausea or is there a way to find out? i'm sick of being on antinausea pills and feeling nauseaous. the nausea increase after my dose change. anybody? i know this is a way out there question. SunshineOutside
Hey Mel, No, this is not a "way out there question." Stopping the bc pills could theoretically cause the amount of Lamictal to be absorbed to be altered. I Don't know how those two "meds" interact but I just came off Trileptal because it was affecting the level of Lamictal being absorbed. Pdoc could adjust the amount of Lamictal or you could get a lab test to show how much Lamictal is in your system. If you have been of the bc long enough to clear your system then you should be able to approximate the amount of Lamictal being absorbed by the dosage. Theoretically. What do you think? I have side effects of bad headaches and nausea too and I have not yet found the answer to that very real problem. My best, SO
dangergirl
I don't think this is a weird question at all...and I've read a few posts here and on crazymeds about what will affect the absorption of Lamictal...and yes, BC is one of those things and yes, nasea is a SE of taking Lamictal...I guess the question is - can you remember when the nasea started? Was it at the same time you stopped the BC pills? You know, that's really funny - I never thought about it - I stopped BC too (switched to an IUD) and my migraines stopped too - and not until you just said this did I realize it...I think I've had maybe one or two since then....NOICE! I'd been on BC forever...lol. Thanks Mel! Can I make a suggestion to you? You've been switching meds and up and down so much, maybe you might want to create a blog here - even if you keep it private - an entry at the end of every day where you note the meds you took and how you felt...that way you have a record that you can go back and check on if something like this comes up again. I started one...not awesome at it, as you can see - mine is public...but it's better than nothing...and I'll be able to review it and print what I need to take to pdoc when I go next week. Just throwing it out there as a tool to help you manage this in the future....bc all this switching things around is really confusing for me and it sucks...you never know what's the meds and what's just your moods...having the record helps the pdoc sort through some stuff (at least that's my hope with the new guy - he does seem on the ball - let's keep our fingers crossed...lol). Oh - one last ?? - how've you been feeling since you started taking the 350? Has your nasea increased? That could be another clue to this daunting puzzle... dangergirl
Kazuma - thanks for bringing this post back up to the top....I was thinking about you the other day Mel and was wondering if, now that you have a job, do you have benefits that will cover some of these tests for you? That way you won't have to cover the costs out of pocket...the other thing that I was thinking is...and I don't know if you've mentioned this or not....have you had your ears checked? Sometimes inner ear problems can cause this type of nausea - and mentioning your problems with car travel is what made me think about it...just throwing it out there. lysergia
effexor made me so sick i literally damaged my stomach from taking it for too long (ignoring that side effect). i thought the nausea would go away as the effexor went away. i thought the lamotrigine (new to me for the last few months) would be neutral in that area. NOT. i am still nauseous (probably beyond what most people would accept)... it just feels like a different nausea somehow (effexor was like acid reflux... lamotrigine hurts down lower than that). maybe this will go away for me... but i wouldn't be surprised if it didn't. were you nauseous when you started lamictal? maybe the increase did it? if you weren't sick to begin with i'd be looking for other answers too. i dunno. but like you there's no antinausea pill that works - none. maybe the superexpensive stuff chemo patients get would work... but yeah like anybody's going to cover that off-label. i haven't taken birth control pills for twenty years, so i am way out of the loop on that one. had a tubal ligation, and there ain't no side effects from that, heh. sorry i'm not helping am i. just wanted to say me too i guess. -lysergia
