jillista
A little background for this story ... I'm a manager at a fast food restaurant, which does NOTHING to help my depression, because I have a bachelor's degree, taught high school for six years, and am three classes away from my master's degree. I don't want to teach anymore, but I do want a better job than what I have now. I'm not sure exactly what my dream job would be - I'm trying to look for something in hr/corporate training or something similar, but have found NOTHING. At this point, I would take ANY job with decent pay, benefits, and a reasonable schedule. Oh, and a job that didn't make me smell at the end of the day. It's getting harder and harder to convince myself to try, though, because I've been getting nowhere. An asshole I dealt with today, though, has helped me to believe that it's worth another round of resumes. Good thing, because I'm sure that's the only good thing this fucker has done in his lifetime. Okay, here's the story: I took an order through the drive-thru from someone who didn't know what they wanted and kept changing his mind. I kept asking questions - do you want cheese on that? did you want the value meal? etc, etc and finally gave him his total. HE paid, got his food, and left. Maybe five minutes later, he returned, and the guy in the passenger seat took the sandwich I had given him and threw it at two of my employees at our first window while cursing them out. He said that he had ordered cheese (he hadn't) and we had screwed it up. They told him that they would give him a new sandwich and sent him to the next window. When he got there, he started cursing me out. I gave him a new sandwich and told them that they needed to leave immediately. I said it three or four times before they drove away. Or so I thought ... they came back AGAIN and the passenger came into the restaurant to start cursing me out again. He was asking for my name and telling me that he was going to "call corporate" (good luck - like "corporate" even knows who I am!) and was continually swearing at me. I told him my name and once again told him several times to leave. Finally, I went outside to get the license plate number of the truck so that I could call the police and have these men removed. The piece of shit followed me outside to continue his swearing and yelling and his friend in the truck started backing up so that I couldn't see his license plate. When he figured out that I already had it, though, he started driving the truck TOWARDS me. I walked away and the two finally left for what turned out to be the last time that night. I was so absolutely pissed off, but also scared for the rest of the night that they would return. It was also frustrating to me that if the little fucker manages to call the office of the franchisee that I work for, they'll probably get an apology for MY behavior and some coupons in the mail. Yes, it's definitely time to get another job. I'm educated, intelligent, and the worst that I would treat a stranger is what I would call civil. However, because of my job, I'm supposed to deal with a man who was ignorant and aggressive as well as toothless and probably drunk too. I was mad at how he treated my employees and mad that I didn't feel that I could answer him in the way that would have been more appropriate - by calling the police as soon as he threw the sandwich in the window. The whole thing was just demoralizing. So glad that I had a place to vent about it.

r.mcmurphy
jillista, i am incapable of expressing my distress of your predicament. everyone deserves respect, no matter how they make their living. i can not eat in a restaurant unless it's a family outfit. i have known many waittrons and my son was a short order cook. the work sucks and i feel like a fish out of water when being served. there is no problem for me relating to your disdain for teaching. although my role in that game was with knuckle head apprentices, it was the worst part of being a journeyman. scour the want ads, haunt the temp agencies and the state employment offices. you have a good, educated brain in your head and there is someplace for you that isn't demeaning. you gotta get outta there. dealing with the public is not something that i have done for wages. i am only now doing so on a voluntary basis at our podunk public library. library work is sometimes scut but there is almost no chance of encountering scumbags unlike your current gig. move on, move on, m......... withing
I feel for you. As a former night manager at a gas station, I can definitely feel for you - because apparently I was personally responsible for the gas prices, the car wash breaking down, and whatever else went wrong there... and I couldn't give the assholes yelling at me the dressing down they deserved either. . Anyway, I can completely understand the need to look for a better job. :-) Good luck!
jillista
Thanks for the help and the kind words, everyone. I did let my supervisor know about it so that if there's a phone call, he already knows the story. Of course, everyone from my crew will back me up too. I had today off, found some places to get my resume to, and I'm feeling much better. I'm so thankful that I had you guys to listen, though.
