The weight gain and tiredness with Zyprexa is awful and I can't take it anymore. I'm already morbidly obese but we are talking 40 pounds in 3 months. Ridiculous! That said, I LOVE the stuff. It is the ONLY thing that works for my severe depression and gets me out of the black hole but every time I try to wean off of it and just use the Paxil I go right back into the suicidal depression. My pdoc just tells me to keep trying to wean off, is not really giving me options for something else similar that might help. Does anyone have experience with anything similar that may help supplement the Paxil? Geodon maybe? I tried Abilify but it didn't seem to help much... may try again...

Im on Geodon and it really does help with depression. I haven't been depressed since I've been on it, and I don't take an antidepressant. It can bring on mania though in those with bp. I noticed it did with me. I've also heard Seroquel can be good to help with depressive symptoms, especially when augmenting with an antidepressant. Good luck with your med search.

I'm on seroquel (and have been for months) and i've been told it's good for both mania and depression. I'm going through my first severe depression ever so my doctor added Remeron for both sleep and it's an anti depressant. Seroquel really did save my life though when it came to both aspects of bipolar. You might want to research it a little and mention it to your Pdoc. Good luck!

Getting off of Zyprexa is difficult in and of itself. Withdrawal is hell, even from a low dose like 2.5 mg. I had to cut it into halves, then quarters, then every other night, etc. Couldn't sleep for about a week and was severely depressed. Things got back to normal about 2 weeks later.

Seroquel is a great option to augment an SSRI for depression, especially if you need something sedating like Zyprexa to help you sleep. It still has the weight gain issue, but not as severe as Zyprexa. I was on 50 mg for 6 months to augment Zoloft and it worked great for depression. Got off because of weight gain.

Never tried Geodon, but it should have anti-depressant properties since it's an AAP. Supposedly weight neutral.

Low dose abilify is working great for me (5mg) to augment 150mg of Zoloft. Supposedly weight neutral. I've lost 5 pounds since I switched over from Zyprexa (I only gained about 10 pounds on Zyprexa - I stopped because of increased triglycerides and cholesterol).

What was your experience with Abilify? How much did you take? Did you get akathesia? Did you give it enough time to work? I stayed on Zyprexa (2.5 mg) for 2 weeks after I started the Abilify, then slowly tapered (over a month) off of the Zyprexa.

Any of the three could be could be good options for you. Good luck.

I was only on about 5 mg of Abilify and it made me feel like I was in a bubble after about a week. I had tapered up from 2.5 mg. Maybe I didn't go high enough on the Abilify or give it a real chance? I think I was only on it for a couple of weeks before I threw in the towel because of the goofy bubble feeling.

Seroquel is great for sleep but really knocks me out. I literally had to shave parts off of a 25 mg pill and even THAT knocked me out. It's tough because I work full time and have two babies who are 3 and 1 and am a single mom so being really tired all the time isn't an option for me. I'm already tired all the time! LOL
