Dweii
Fluanxol (flupenthixol) is easily the best med I've ever tried. It evens out mood swings, keeps me from going psychotic during panic attacks and even works a lil bit like an antidepressant. I don't think it's used that often in the US, simply because it's old and the new APs have less side effects, but so far I'm totally side effect free. Yay. I love this med, cannot say enough good things about it. Anyone tried it?
Echo
Just bumbing this thread to say YAY! for you Helena. I'm so very glad you're happy with this med. Lets hope the side effect free stage lasts forever. Echo
dreamless
Yeah (I think I have mentioned it before on the old board). I tried it for about a month, low dose monotherapy, and for me it didn't work out at all. Made me quite aggressive, which normally isn't one of my problems; horrible paranoid nightmares, headaches, dry mouth, blurred vision. I was relieved to get off it and onto Geodon. I guess it's a good example of YMMV. I have heard of a couple of other people who found Fluanxol useful to even out mood swings and impulsive behaviour, and it's not as sedating as many other typical APs. And yes, much cheaper than the newer atypicals. I'm really happy you had the option to try it, since it sounds like it's working excellently for you! Guest Guest
Basically when one has schizophrenia or bi-polar and one is on full dosages of an AP the child seems totaled on either atypical antipsychotics or typcial antipsychotics. The parent see only a huge huge difference in cost. Many parents figure I will take the totaled child on the cheap drug. Now if the child was going to get a Ph.D I would spend the money for the atypical but hey the child is totaled. To the child though there is a substantial difference between having some affect and having no affect. To the quality of life of the child the drugs make a big difference. Many many parents are now trying to get children on the cheap drugs regardless of a deterioration in the lives of their very very ill children. Guest Guest
I'm actually relieved to hear that it actually does something. I was put on it at various points between 2003 and 2004 (actually mostly during hospitalisations) and I really didn't know what it was supposed to be doing. When I got out of hospital I carried on taking it as prescribed (can't remember the dosage), but noticed not an iota of difference to anything. Great that you've found something that works for you... I always appreciate stories like this, simply because it gives me a teeny bit of hope that at some point in the (hopefully not too distant) future my pdoc will hit on a similarly miracle-type drug for me. PS not in the US either!
