Since my daughter was born 4 months ago my gp has been pushing me to try Risperdal and I have been hesitant till lately when yesterday I hallicunated that this guy was trying to cut off my foot. That was pretty damn scary!!! ;) and then I questioned whether it is that great to not be on any phych meds. I am scared though that i am going to gain weight on it. that is one of my number one fears of medications. and I just wanted to know anyones experience good or bad on risperdal. Did it work for you? and does it help with depression? I took it for a couple days but I quit it when I got the fear I was going to gain weight on it.

I am struggling right now to admit that maybe all this natural gunk isnt doing a thing and I need the psych meds. I could use some support and advice on this.

I like Risperdal. Not as sedating as seroquel and no noticable side effects for me, unlike Abilify or Geodon. I think it isn't as bad as seroquel for weight gain.

Sounds like you could really benefit from some meds. Embrace the possibility of being better and know that there are meds out there that are weight neutral. Hallucinating that someone is chopping off your foot can't be good for you or your baby.

I've been on and off it for the past 4 years, and a year previously and have never had any problems except when I was on Abilify too.

Its generally known as a good med by drs and I agree. I find that in the higher doses I can get a bit "out of it" so YMMV with that one. Might be a good idea to catch public transport until you know how it will effect you... but that goes with most meds.

Well thanks all for your relieving messages, I really appreciate it, I took the risperdal last night, still couldnt sleep very well, and well I guess I could give it a try, if it does anything weird though I am going to get on something else, but a lot of you eased my mind about it. THANK YOU.

  • 3 weeks later...

here's my two cents if still wanted....

Risperdal has helped me a lot with the anxiety and racing thoughts. my mind still wanders, but only with one or two thoughts at a time, instead of the crowded place it used to be.

I took it for a little while. probably only about 2 weeks and the side effects were not worth it, bc it didnt even help wth my sza, and that is what I was taking it for. I got headaches on it, I felt lethargic, to the point of being unable to function, it didnt help me sleep, and it was giving me weird side effects not even mentioned on the pi sheet. It was pretty knarly. I dont like it at all.

I have been on 2 mg of Risperdal for just over 2 years. I am now starting to get extrapyramidal symptoms like stiff jaw and cheeks, twitching eyebrows, etc. I have gained about 55 pounds since I started it 2 years ago. On Monday my doctor is switching me to Invega to try and eliminate the extrapyramidal symptoms.

I was taking 1-2mg at bedtime when I would start with manic feelings. I had to take it then jump in bed because it would knock me out. But then I would wake up all night with muscle spasms in my legs, back, chest, etc.

On the other hand, my son (8 1/2 yo at the time), would take 1mg before and after school, and was fine!

As they say YMMV.

Good Luck
