Good gravy!!!  That makes me mad too!!!  Ack, I don't even want to comment on this because I'm a Harry Potter fan and totally and completely believe children need to read instead of wasting their time playing video games.  Guess I commented after all.

They won't let them read Harry but let them play Grand Theft Auto, San Andreas. People do suck. I had the 1st 4 for my grandson before he was born. He has the 5th. And now the 6th! He can't read though. He is only 5. He has a fruitcake for a grandmother.  ;)

Pupils from The Holt Primary School in Skellingthorpe, Lincs, were planning to dress up as witches and wizards.

But the event - to mark the launch of the new JK Rowling book - was scrapped after parents and a local rector expressed concerns about witchcraft.

Headteacher Paul Martin said the rector claimed he was seeking "to lead our children into areas of evil".

Children are said to have been left upset and confused by the cancellation of the day, which was due to be held before the launch of Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince on Saturday.

In a letter to parents, headteacher Paul Martin wrote: "When I received a letter from the rector which suggested that I was 'seeking to lead our children into areas of evil', I felt that the situation was escalating disproportionately.

RANT ON:

Jesus H. Merciful Christ on a popsicle stick...this is the most retarded (and I mean that in the literal way...it is limiting progress...retarding) thing I have seen in a while.

Witchcraft?  Really?  What next; will they ban Lucky Charms because of its link to the occult and its obvious pro-IRA character?

What about Halloween?  Nope, no witchcraft there...just good old fashioned fun. Will the kids be allowed to dress as witches then?

How about Macbeth?  Can't read that play or act it out...there's witches and stuff in that there play.

Oh wait how about that glorious holiday they have in the UK...Guy Fawkes Day where they burn the effigy of dude (Roman Catholic by the way) who tried to blow up Parliament?  Is there anything wrong with that?

Use some common sense people!  Harry Potter is not real, it is a jeezly book.  Kids like it...it makes them read.  You won't let them dress up like their favourite characters from Harry Potter, but you will let that foul mouthed tosser Jamie Oliver into their school kitchens and tell them that they ought to "F*cking well try the curried pig's arse...you might f*cking like it."

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

There is so much that we have to worry about in this world, so much that is far more important and REAL than whether Harry Goddamn Potter is directing our children into the occult.  I mean come on...what about simply growing up healthy and safe?  Isn't that hard enough?

But oh, I forgot J.K. Rowling is the Anti-Christ (and all along I suspected it was Rove...go figure).

RANT OFF.

Sorry about that...this just sort of set me off.

This reminds me of when my daughter was in grade school and they changed Halloween to " Happy Pumpkin Day".  They could only wear costumes like princesses, clowns and crap like that.  No witches, devils, or anything "evil".  I think it raised my blood pressure about 50 points I was so pissed.

We are in the Bible belt however.  I am a christian, but a lot of these people are the most fanatical, intolerant I've ever seen.

Yeah, they tried doing that around here, but gave up for reasons I'm not sure of since I'm not a parent.  I think it's just plain ignorance, to be honest with you.  I still won't make any serious comments about this whole issue because if I start, I won't be able to contain myself.

I did the same thing with the Harry Potter books *laughs*  Read them from beginning to the end...then again, I do that with most books if they keep my attention. Right now I'm debating on whether or not if I should make a midnight run to Wal-Mart to buy a copy or just wait it out.

As for this whole subject between the Evil Harry Potter Day canceled...personally, I figured somewhere in the world, this would happen.  This subject has been brought up many times since the books came out.  Would Harry's world warp the mind of children???  Oh, come on people!!!  Wake the hell up!  If Harry's world is going to warp the minds of children, then we might as well get rid of ALL fantasy books, movies, video games and so on and so forth.

Personally, when I was growing up, I used to pretend I was a witch that could cast spells all because I watched Capser the Friendly Ghost and thought Wendy the Witch was cool.  Did it warp my mind???  Um, well I am a weird...so don't answer that.  *laughs*

*sighs* Parents these days are too anal.  I'm sorry.  They just are.  I wish I was a parent.  Then again, I don't.  My poor kid would have one helluva time trying to tell the school what I do for a living.  "My mommy is a singer and she writes vampire books and she's a witch.  A real witch!  Not like in Harry Potter!"  *laughs*

I agree; I know a few parents who monitor the books, practically start a book burning, but dont care what the kids watch on TV?? wtf is up with THAT?

maybe if they actually *watched* some of the cartoons  they'd throw the tube out.

I dont remember my parents freaking over "house with a clock in its walls" which is basically Harry Potter without the school.  In fact my mom bought it for me.  But she clucks her tongue at Potter. weird.

Hey scarlet, you ever think about big sisters? I'm too new to have found all your posts, but is it a possibility?

No witches, devils, or anything "evil".  I think it raised my blood pressure about 50 points I was so pissed.

when I was eight, my mom *suddenly* decided hallowe'en was evil, and wouldn't let me dress up and go out anymore.

I remember sneaking off with a partial lame costume on, and standing in our driveway to watch the other kids go trick or treat.  Just so i could feel like I was participating.  i was SO sad.

Gee, do you think that had anything to do with my present agnosticism?  hm...

Not sure I totally understand whatcha mean by that...but I will say this, I have a half-sister out there in the world I've never met before and would love to know her and a half-brother too.  It would be pretty scary and rather fascinating to find them both.  I don't even know how old they'd be.  I just know their first names too.  Boy, this is way off the subject of Harry Potter.  *laughs*  Maybe I should start a thread...looking for my half-sister and brother...where are you?

Ahhh...I'm still debating on whether or not to go to Devil-Mart (my nickname for Wal-Mart) and get my copy of Harry.  It's going on one here in PA and I'm sure they've got the books out by now.  Man, I hate indecision.

Elizabeth...still debating

I got my copy of HP tonight, and I am fighting the temptation to open it up and start reading it.  I do need to sleep sometime tonight.

I was reminded tonight of another story that seems appropriate here.  A teacher in a small high school in Colorado assigned her students a book to read.  The book was Bless Me, Ultima, a book on Laura Bush's recommended reading list.  She made it clear that an alternate book was available for students who's parents declined to allow them to read the book.  Unfortunately, the parents of one student complained.  The principal had all copies of the book removed, gave the parents the books, and the parents disposed of them.  This was in February.

I wish incidents like this were uncommon, but they aren't.

I'm going to bed now.  G'night.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Funny Stasis.  I ordered Harry Potter last week, my 10 year old daughter refused to go out today until they delivered the book.  She read the 5 others at least 20 times and she was so happy today!!  I love Harry Potter, if only he could make me happy too  ;)

Well, it's the witching hour here and I'm going to celebrate by reading a little HP no. 6  ;) Damn, I'm so excited I'm afraid I'll get to the end before I know it and then goodness only knows how long we'll have to wait for no. 7!

Just on the topic of books and reading....in grade 8 my reading group had the distinct honour of choosing our own book to read...."Flowers in the Attic" was just out...(I know, I'm dating myself here, and I can hear you if you are saying "never heard of it...") and the teacher SHOULD have read it before saying it was OK for us to start it....OOOPS...big rape scene between brother and sister.  Still, it was read out loud by someone (we read the entire book out loud in our groups) and nothing was said about it.

Just a story from my past.  Please return to your normal activities.

Thank you and good night.

Dating yourself?  hee hee...Honey, I may not have read that book when it first came out, but I am a faithful V.C. Andrews fan and have read every single last book that she and her family have written since "Flowers".  I just can't believe they actually read that book out loud and in a class.  Especially when Christopher raped his sister!  Damn!  That was one twisted class you were in.

I didn't end up staying up all night like I thought I would reading Harry, not that it bored me, quite the opposite, I just passed out with the book lying ontop of me.  *chuckles*  Now I have to go back and reread a chapter because I forgot half of it.

I'm beginning to wonder if we should now start a discussion on the book...but I'm afraid of getting ahead of others or others getting ahead of me.  Oh well.

Gonna go feed the "kids" and sit down and read.

I haven't read any of the Harry Potter books, just never got into them.  But, I've read a lot about them.  I saw the movies - cute.  Anyway - to the topic.  I remember when the first book came out, and there was a big uproar from the religious right because it was about witchcraft and magic and "evil"... and just as strong was the other side saying, "shut up - they're *reading*!" (Just like we are).  Either way, I think the author, what's her name? Rawlings?  I think she's laughing all the way to the bank, and good for her.

All of my kids have read the Harry Potter books. They love them.  I say to the religious fanatics - grow up.  If you don't want *your* kids to read them, that's your right.  Leave your beliefs out of my parenting.

Situtations like the one that started this thread are why my kids were pulled out of school and homeschooled.  I got sick of the stupidness, and you just cannot reason with some people.

You know something, I totally forgot about the religious crap about Harry Potter and our town.  They won't play the movies here in Clearfield because of the witchcraft and wizardry content...BUT get a load of this...just two weeks ago, our small town theater played "Bewitched".  Go figure!  They of course sell the movies and the books out at Wal-Mart, but that's as close as Harry Potter comes to Clearfield.
