Wellbutrin SR Side-Effects

Recommended Posts

;)   I started Wellbutrin SR 150mg about 2 weeks ago.  While I have the usual new antidepressant side-effect such as dry mouth etc., I seem to be angry all the time and even more depressed.  Before I went on them, I was depressed some of the time but my mood also shifted to happy at least occasionally!  I was diagnosed as possible BPD about 6 years ago and am used to mood swings and intense anger, with the pills the anger seems to come more quickly and lasts longer... in fact it feels like it doesn't go away.  Does this get better?  I haven't gone up to the 300 mg dose yet - to worried.  Oh, that's another thing - constant rumination!  CONSTANT!  What is your experience with this drug???

oh yes, wellbutrin does have the tendency to spark aggressive tendencies. and rumination. sometimes the edginess fades, sometimes not. and my experience with wellbutrin is that it makes me kinda weepy--which is funny for an antidepressant. but it does keep me out of the pits of depression. sometimes it can be taken with an SSRI to take the edginess off. you can check out the main "Non-SSRI Antidepressants - Are we happy yet? Part 1" board for more info from others. i would definitely talk to my doctor about this tho. if its making you feel worse then maybe its not the right drug for you.

Wellbutrin is definately not the drug for you if you have issues with rage. Seems like your doctor has it all bas-ackwards. Have you told your doctor about your aggressive mood swings? I am on the 'downer regimen' because I have anxiety issues and dysphoric states.

Wellbutrin gives me panic attacks.

Thanks so much for your imput.  I didn't take the Wellbutrin on Saturday or Sunday and my mood improved dramatically.  Took it again this morning as I am also using it to try to quit smoking (Day 1).  I hope it gets better.

Just thought I'd chime in, I was on the wellbutrin XL 150 and it made me extremely agitated and anxious. It didn't do anything for my depression, and I don't think I took it long enough to help me quit smoking. For smoking I'm going to have to use the patch or gum, if I can get insurance to copay on it.

Myevilme,

Not to change the subject of the board but it is about smoking. Check and see if your ins. co. has some kind of health or wellness program. Usually they have someone who can help you quit. Some have smoking cessation classes. Also, they may pay the co-pay for you on generic patches or gum. That was what mine did. Might have to do some investigation. If they have a webpage, that might help you start.

Best of luck to both of you!

Hello, PixiePants...

Okay, this is very interesting.  My doc put me on Wellbutrin after my anxiety got really bad, which I'm not sure was an especially constructive idea.  (To some extent, I bitched about this already on the benzo board here.)

Then I went off it (w/out telling anyone, until I'd been totally off it for almost two weeks), and felt SO much better.  But then, some three weeks after quitting it, I was feeling like dogshit - far worse than I'd felt before starting the Wellbutrin.  Plus, I was distracted beyond the usual (am ADD and on Concerta), so bad it was like I was disintegrating.  (If you took "skin cells" as being analagous to "neurons," you could say it was the equivalent of my skin peeling off in sheets).  So I went back on the Wellbutrin a few days ago and feel about 80% better (so far, that is).

But now I'm wondering about something else I'm experiencing and whether it might be a side effect - almost constant (albeit fairly low-grade) hand and wrist pain.  I'm terrible about keeping track of my symptoms, correlating changed moods with particular meds and events, etc. So, there's no way for me to know with certainty what might be causing this, but it has occurred to me that I was having it over the last few months (when I'd been on the Wellbutrin) and that in the recent span of weeks after I'd stopped taking it, I wasn't having the pain.

And now I've been back on Wellbutrin for a few days, and as of today, the pain is back.  Major caveat: I've been writing a lot.  Then again, I'm always writing a lot.  My first thought during the initial period with the pain was "oh fuck, I have carpal tunnel syndrome now" but then I researched the crap out of that, and it doesn't sound like it could be that.  (I'm not, for example, experiencing any numbness, which evidently is a hallmark of the syndrome.)

Now I'm just flummoxed.  I'd rather not go back to the "my, but those razor blades look so pretty and inviting" state I was in right before I went back on the Wellbutrin.  But (even if the hand/wrist pain has nothing to do w/ Rx) the side effects I have had with Wellbutrin are irritating enough that I would consider going off it again (only I would, like, tell my doctor, for shit's sake) if, after weighing pros and cons, it just didn't seem worth it.  Ideas, anybody?

Boy, if it's just in your writing hand, that's pretty suspicious, isn't it?  I can think of two possibilities, both of which involve aggravating an existing strain, not causing it per se:

1) you are indeed writing more when on the Wellbutrin - if it's tipping you towards mania, remember hypergraphia is a famous symptom!

2) it's causing some kind of extra muscle tension in your body at large.

Hi there.  Thanks for you responses.  I haven't taken the $#^#$^ Wellbutrin for 5 days now, I think.  I am at least able to smile now.  Still have the nasty mood swings, but that could be due to the PMS and/or quitting smoking!!!  Let me know what happens with your hand/wrist pain.
