Going off Celexa/Citalopram

Recommended Posts

I am very sensitive to this med. It took me three weeks to get to 10mg. I tried to go to 15mg and I ate everything in sight. Has anyone gone off Celexa? How did you do it? Going on it, I felt as though my head would come off my head, headaches, shakes, anxiety. I fear going off will be worse. I would appreciate hearing from others. Thanks!

I found Celexa to be the easiest SSRI to quit, however, I had virtually no side effects whatsoever with it. A conservative approach would be to reduce your dose by 5 mgs per week. If that proves to be too fast, simply go back up to your previous dose for another week before trying to reduce it again.

Good luck.

I can't really say about other AD's, the taperings always happened alongside other med changes (fun, NOT), but I thought Celexa was difficult. My main problem was that my head would spin. I would look in one direction, and it would take a few seconds for my brain to whirl around. I had to keep going back to a higher dose, then taper again. Unfortunately, it took a while.

Sorry to have this be bad news. Maybe it was just me, and there are other positive experiences. Good luck.

I had a relatively easy time going off Celexa. I wouldn't recommend this to you since you seem more sensitive to Celexa than me, but I went cold turkey and didn't have any noticeable effects. My pdoc told me it has a very long half-life at the time (one of the longest of the SSRIs) which is supposed to make it easier to get off.

I would go with 5mg down a week, but have you talked to your doc to see what they say?

The doc told me to go off very slowly, down to 5mg. But the 10mg seem to be working well for now. I am scared to go off to be honest. It took me so long to get used to it. AGH! Thanks!!!

I'm about to go off Celexa too. It just doesn't seem to be working that much for me (even though it did at least stop with my uncontrollable weeping for a little while).

I've been taking 40mg and my doc said once we start getting off we'd start with less and less of Celexa at the same time with more and more of the "new one" (have no idea what he wants to try next).

I desperately need something to help with my weeping and with wanting to do stuff...

I'll post here if I have any trouble getting off. (so far I've had only a bit of side effects on the first weeks I was taking it, but nothing major)

i was at 40mg and my dr wanted me to drop to 20mg. i didnt want to take any chances dropping from 40 straight to 20 so i did it very slowly. 40 to 30 for 10 days. then 30 to 20. i had no side effects at all with 40 and was on that dose for a year, but we were adding and titrating lamictal so they wanted me to lower my celexa dose.

oh and because i was lowering the celexa, i titrated the lamictal in between tapering the celexa so if there were any SEs id know which was causing them.
