I was just diagnosed with Temporal Lobe Epilepsy on Friday and was also just prescribed Keppra for the first time on Friday. I have been super depressed, but I was depressed before, so I don't know if it's the Keppra making it worse, or if I'm just fucking depressed?

Also, it has NOT been making me tired or helping me sleep and no, I have not lost my appetite (unfortunately. I need to lose weight and stop eating so damn much).

Anyone else on Keppra? What has been your experience with it? I'm currently on 250mgs twice a day. Next friday I go up to 500mgs, twice a day.

I've been on it for a few months and for the most part am a big fan of it. I haven't noticed it at any point having much effect on my mood (more or less depressed than usual), but it did make me pretty cranky for a while until I figured out the right amount to take and when to take it. At 500mg twice a day, and when I raised it again after that, it definitely screwed with my sleep and made me a bit more tired, but that went away within a week each time. No change whatsoever in appetite, although I don't know that it has a reputation for influencing weight in either direction. Pretty sure it's fairly neutral towards that.

At this point, I'm on 500mg four times a day. It stopped my seizures pretty much entirely at 500mg twice a day, but I actually have more side effects if I don't take it more often than this. Since settling in at what appears to be the right dosing for me, though, I've had almost no problems with it. My neurologist tells me he gets fewer complaints about side effects with Keppra than with anything else, so hopefully that'll be the case for you, too.

Thank you! The doc wants me to go up to 1,000mgs and that's it for now. I know that's a ridiculously low dose.

Keprra, also lovingly referred to as KepRAGE, is infamous for causing mood changes. I became quite cranky, like Nalgas, when I first started, but as I titrated up to 3,000mgs. it got better. I think. My husband will still tell you I'm a moody bitch, I'm sure.

Anyway, just make sure you communicate with your doctor. I mean, tell him everyting you're experiencing on this med., especially considering you're prone to depression.

Oh, I've found it to be weight-neutral, as well.
