hi all,

i started lamictal feb 1 with the 5 week starter pack. now i have an rx for 100mg. and it seems the change from 50 to 100 has been kind of hellish. i got really depressed, had an "existential crisis," a rash (but not THE RASH), and headaches.

now, its like the headaches have moved behind my eyes. i can see...but within an hour of taking it, i feel this pressure behind my eyes.

I also have this weirdness when it comes to my eyes - as in no one comes close to touching them. when i go to the eye doctor, i do the touching. no one else.

so...i guess im doubly flipped out because 1. of the s/e and 2. because the pain is close to my eyes.

and it makes me sleepy so i take at night w/ all my other meds.

thanks,

db

DB - Lamictal titration is super, super wierd. Do you know what target dosage your pdoc is going for? It's maybe the med that it's hardest to say whether or not the side effects are worth sticking out, or are so bad you need to d/c, because they tend to be so different at different dosages, as do its beneficial effects of the med. It is surprising that it would have made you more depressed at 100mg, as it usually has more antidepressant qualities at the lower dosages. FWIW, going from 50 to 100mg in one fell swoop sounds like kind of a big jump to me, which might have something to do with your reaction. Both times I've titrated up on Lamictal, it's been in 25mg increments.

Hi,

sasha - those are some very good questions i havent asked my pdoc. i have an appt in a few weeks. im trying to be "confident" in that i'll make it until then.

resonance - the pain differentiates - sometimes one eye, sometimes both, sometimes alternating. this pain is only at night about an hour after ive taken the lamictal. although right now at this moment im having a headache that feels like someone is stabbing me on top of my head. ive taken 4 advil - and no relief. lovely.

thanks for the help!! if anyone has anything else to add, please do.

thanks,

db

I sorta remember having eye pain associated with starting Lamictal. There are so many joys in starting that med.... headaches, achiness, soreness...etc. But they all eventually fade away. The first few weeks are the worst.

If it hasn't let up, you could try droping down half the dose you last increased and wait until the side effects have disappeared before bumping upwards. Remember, there is no race to the top with Lamictal. Take a pace your body can tolerate.

Weird, I've been getting a lot of headaches lately, but I'm only on 50mgs a day so I don't know if the two are related.

Since you made your first post in this thread, have you spoken to your doc? What did they say?

I hope the headaches are gone!!!!
