mghalt
I thought that was totally untrue and even asked her twice. She said that Risperdal and some other one are at the time, then Abilify and Geodon. She said Seroquel was least likely. That doesn't sound right to me as I've seen scores of people gain weight on it... or am I confusing it with Depakote? Someone chime in... is my pdoc a quack? netsavy006
I always thought that abilify and geodon were the lowest offenders. Seroquel can cause weight gain.
Zippy
Maybe she thinks you plan to smoke crack with it. I'm 50 pounds heavier and I think the above poster is right about abilify and geodon. It's a real gainer. It messes with blood sugar and can cause diabetes. You really have to watch your weight. That being said, I do know a few that didn't gain. Everyone's different. However, I need the benefits, so I just have to fight the 50 pounds.
mrsloony
I have heard lots of people talk about weight gain with seroquel. I am one who fits with what pdoc said- I gained 50 lbs on risperidon and none on seroquel.
Rabbit37
I hate to say it, but yes, I gained a few pounds on it. And it's tough to get off, diet does NOT work for me. I think it's really messed with my metabolism. I've found that the exercise bike helps more, it's just getting the motivation to do it every day. Some days that's absolutely the *last* thing I feel like doing, and I'm not in the depressive pit right now. I also do stupid things like buy oreos for the kids, and wind up eating a few. Keep the junk out of the house, and you'll be less likely to gain weight. Don't go to the store hungry.
Penny Century
generally it's abilify then geodon that are named as the ones to not cause weight gain. seroquel, risperdal and zyprexa (zyprexa having the largest impact) tend to cause gain. withing
I didn't gain weight on Seroquel the four years I was on it... I did, however, start to crave carbs the first few weeks I started to take it... but, once I knew why I was craving carbs, I was able to curb that craving. I lost weight on Seroquel. I'm on it again, and not gaining weight - again, losing weight. I understand that it is notorious as a weight gainer, and one of the side effects can be diabetes... so I am keeping a look out. I did gain weight on Risperdal and on Geodon - I also had lost all sex drive on Risperdal. It wasn't my favorite med.
witchywoman
My pdoc has told me in the past it will make you gain weight, and is why I haven't been put on it. Im on Geodon and losing weight.
mghalt
I knew it!!! Anyway, she said Geodon is the next line of defense and I could stand to lose about 200, so yeah, that would be nice. lol That said, I did get a peaceful night's sleep on Seroquel last night. Newtonium
For me, it is a dose-dependent thing. Anywhere up to 400 mg, I don't gain weight. At 400 the mad munchies kick in, and I gain weight. But not a lot--I'm talking maybe 10, 15 lbs. My clothes still fit and everything. I don't think the weight gain is a given for everybody.
netsavy006
There are also ways you can combat (or at least reduce) the weight gain. I seen someting on InsiderMedicine in 60 about the use of the drug Metformin and combination with Lifestyle Changes to be beneficial.
katiedarlin
I haven't gained a pound on 150/mg at night. PDOC tells me that if one takes it before bed, then they'll avoid weight gain by sleeping through the hunger (if they do become hungry).
