mghalt
I just started taking 25 mg of Seroquel at bedtime and have been having some really vivid nightmares. Is this typical?
DMF
Yes - one of the not-so-pleasant side effects for many.
withing
Yeah, I had some real doozies when I started taking Seroquel the first time. Like all other side effects, it disappeared with time. Though my dreams are a little more vivid than usual nowadays, I'm not getting any nightmares.
zenbean
i'd say my dreams are much more vivid that usual (which is saying a lot), but i haven't been having nightmares. definitely noticed a change since i started the seroquel. bean

Mines are just simply great, so great that I get sad when I wake up and realised it was only a dream, hehehehe. The bests vivids dreams I had were on Paxil. OTOH , I made very sad dreams each nights on Klonopin and I never met anyone else with that side effect.

AirMarshall
Paxil gave me vivid dreams. Serquel gave me Technicolor Explosion with fine grain detail dreams. None of which were nightmares. This faded with time and usage. It is possible to learn to direct your dreams. Worth looking up on the internet. Try to think positive and happy things before bed. If your dream turns menacing, tell yourself to either wake up or dream about something else. a.m.

zenbean
here's a typical seroquel dream for me, which i had last night, and which i post mainly for entertainment value. bear in mind this description is highly simplified. i'm in a cottage with some family members and eliot spitzer, our recently disgraced governor. we're going to play scrabble. i'm thinking of asking spitzer some highly personal question about what he's just gone through and wondering if it's ok, seeing as how he's in our living room and all. then i'm at a huge family wedding. i go to get a beer. the bartender says i can only have two (huh? i only wanted one) so i take two, one in each hand. i never get to drink them because... i'm now outside and see a little kid lying on his side crying hysterically. i pick him up and he's saying he's hurt. i look down and see that somehow he's managed to chop off one of his toes. i cradle him in my arms and yell for people to call 911. they arrive and i tell them to pick up the toe, maybe it can be reattached. but now there are three toes in the grass. one is bigger, probably an adult toe, but two are about the same size, and i'm now not sure which is the original toe. doesn't matter, because... now i'm walking down a street at twilight and there's a rockin' r&b band playing on a stand, like at a fair. it's very original quirky and unique music. if only i could remember it enough to duplicate it now! anyway....this goes on and on, all extremely vivid and bizarre. i've always dreamed nearly every night, but seroquel has taken me off into new and different realms. i don't mind. bean
Newtonium
I had horrid nightmares from the time I started taking Seroquel. Truly ghoulish: people eating mummies, half-open coffins from the 1700's with the semiliquid contents oozing out--well, you get the picture. I despaired, because Seroquel helped me so much during the day, but nights were just hell. Then my pdoc added 1 mg of Ativan to my bedtime meds and that has made *all* the difference. I still dream, sometimes vividly, but no nightmares or anxiety dreams. I don't know why or how it helps, but I know that it does. If you're planning on being on Seroquel indefinitely and the sleep problems don't clear up on their own, adding a benzo may be something to consider. mghalt
hmmm... I have Xanax on hand to take as needed, maybe I'll add 0.5 or 1 mg to the mix tonight and see if it saves me from the scary stuff!

Racing thoughts, music that I "thought" I liked sounded like an inferno [yes sounded like an inferno]. I thought my head would explode. Once the initial anxiety subsided, about a week, then I felt really dark & dank. At this point my physican suggested counseling to which I agreed, then upped me to 50 mg. There was another plato to achieve, but not as difficult or as dramatic. I have been on Seroquel now for I guess 3 months, maybe 4 i cant remember. What i do know is that i seem to feel "average". Dreams, at first were a whirlwind of one crazy thought after another but clearing my mind, listening to soft "white" music, then allowing my self to "fall into" sleep has helped. kiss_in_cinci hang in there
grousemouse
i've been taking seroquel (or slurroquel as i used to call it) for some years now. my worst nightmares were when i started taking it and lasted for a couple of months i think. even now though when we change my dosage a little, up or down, the nightmares will come back. mine are mostly war ones and are extremely vivid. eg. i remember cutting my hand while digging through debris trying to find bullets to shoot at the enemy. and i remember in detail cleaning the cut. so yeah, it's all part of the game. grouse. Amy10
I have been on it for 11 months now. What is worse for me compared to nightmares, which I have definitely had, is how, unless I take it just before I am tired enough to know I will fall asleep within 30 minutes (and I need to listen to a sleep mp3 for that!) is the terrifying demonic visions and atmosphere when I shut my eyes and racing heartbeat I get when the dose kicks in. The grogginess has gone, but I sort of miss it as it made me conk out immediately. I have to really prepare for bed now. Eat a banana or something when I take the pills, Valium helps but I am reluctant to go above 1mg a day, immediately start listening to a sleep-enabling mp3 after I take my dose AND cutting down from 550mg to 350mg has helped massively. Of course, my psych thinks that any effect like the above necessitates an increase in dose. Hah! I KNOW it's the Seroquel. Evidence-based medicine research, anyone? After all, when I started off splitting the dose am and pm, the days were a NIGHTMARE. Taking the whole dose at night helped make the days eventually become more bearable and now I am fineish. Considering I am nowhere near unwell enough to start getting psychotic, I know 550mg is too much. I am calmer on 350mg and slightly less terrified of bedtime. Hope you feel better! Guest bill
I just began taking Seroquel last evening. 1/2 a tab (100 mg) was prescribed. I felt loopy tired but couldn't get to sleep because of leg spasms - unpleasant and frustrating. THEN - (after taking a 2.5 mg of Valium) I finally fell into a deep sleep loaded with horrifying and very violent nightmares. I was trapped in dead-ended streets in the Bronx and there were gangs of kids who were at odds w one another and I couldn't get out. Couldn't tell good from bad guys (turned out they were all bad and out for me), got trapped. Car destroyed and the violence was too much and dark to even begin describing. At several points in the dream, I was doing all kinds of things (again, in this nightmare) to wake myself up, including splashing water on my face. Nothing worked and I couldn't pull myself out. I also experienced cold sweats. Anyway, at this point, I've NO intention of ingesting this medication again. There were more threads off the aforementioned scenario ... and this morning (took Seroquel about 9-9:30 and awoke about 9:30-10 AM) I'm feeling listless and a tad dizzy. What a bummer. bill
