ok. now, safe BP alternative to prednisone?

Recommended Posts

hello again!

well, am not going the prednisone route but would love to have some inflammation relief.

so pred is an nsaid? can you only find anti-inflammatories as nsaids? any others that aren't?

on the psychotic level, does one nsaid tend to make you more psychotic than the other?

how about aleve? how bad is it for bp compared to other nsaids?

just wantin' to know.

thanks y'all for all of y'alls help!

No, Prednisone is not an NSAID, it's a steroid. That's why it makes some of us (myself included) go nuts. NSAIDs are fine if they don't interact with your meds. Unfortunately they do interact with lithium, even the mildest, Ibuprophen. Better get a GPs advice.

Oh hell no. It's a synthetic corticosteroid, very closely related to cortisone.

NSAID = non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug.

By definition, anti-inflammatories are either steroids or NSAIDs

Most NSAIDs, again by definition, won't have the same problems as steroids. They have different problems. For starters, they aren't as strong as steroids.

naproxen poses no problem for bipolar patient by itself. For a bipolar patient on lithium, taking naproxen is one of the best ways to build up lithium to toxic levels. The same goes for most other COX-2 inhibitors.

It's been discussed here before, but for someone on lithium the safest anti-inflammatory medications are probably prednisone/methylprednisolone or some other steroidal prep. Acetamenophen may be the least likely to provoke lithium buildup and toxicity, but it's not impossible.

In case you haven't guessed by now, this isn't an "ask the internet" level issue. It's a "talk this over with your doctors" issue.

NullO's right, this is something to discuss with your dr. That said, naproxen did absolutely nothing for me (arthritis pain? Is that what you're talking about?) My rheumatologist prescribed diclofenac, it helped to some degree. You might ask about that.
