I have been on Resperdal and Seroquel so far.  I suffer from horrible anxiety which the Seroquel helps at very high doses, but my main problems are auditory hallucinations and tourettes.  Resperdal helps tourettes but not my hallucinations, and Seroquel doesn't do anything apart from help my anxiety.  I have been reading a lot about Haldol and I really do not see what the problem is with it.

The first sign of TD and I am off the medication.  That goes for all APs.  If I use this method then TD should not be a problem.

The risk of encountering side effects may be higher with Haldol, but I am not a guy who has ever been bothered by side effects!  I will suffer from delayed orgasm on drugs like Paxil, but that is it.

I really think that Haldol may help me, and I can not be bothered going through all the atypicals on the off chance that one of them might help me.

What is so bad about Haldol?

Thanks Flutterfly.  I have done a lot of research on Haldol and I really think that it might help me.  I am in the UK, and I would have thought that the doctors would be eager to get me on something a little bit cheaper than the newer atypicals!  I get on very well with my pdoc and he will probably let me try Haldol if that is what I truly want.  I just don't understand all of the bad comments that this drug gets - I have heard people say that they would rather die than be on Haldol!

As I say, as long as you are ultra aware, TD should not be a huge problem.  The second I experienced any dodgy symptoms I am off the drug.  I believe that it is very good for tourettes (I can hide my TS symptoms well but they cause me significant physical injury through constant tensing of the muscles), and even if I was only able to stay on the medication for say..........6 months, that would be 6 months of my life made easier.

I will continue to research and will have a serious talk with my pdoc about this.

Well I ended up in hospital last night because of the disturbing auditory hallucinations.  All I remember are the voices telling me to jump ove the bridge.  I am 19 and have a student flat, but I live with my parents during the holidays, and apparently I just went nuts (I honestly do not remember).  I took some benzos to calm me down but by that time the paramedics and police where there.  I was angry at the time, but I now realise that everyone was just trying to help me.  The police were very understanding, and my estimation of them has gone up ten fold.

The hospital pdoc was very good with me and he calmed me down no end.  I had to stay in over night and the hospital doc is going to talk to my regular psychiatrist to ensure I get to see him soon - I usually just see him once a month.

Seroquel is a great med in very high doses for anxiety, but it really looks as if I need something else.

I was terrified that they were going to section me, but all is well now.

Awww User, I hope they find some good meds for you soon, you have been having a rough time lately. It does seem like you should be seeing your pdoc more often right now and trying to get stable. How great that the hospital Doc was so good to you.

I'm glad that you got the help you needed! I'm sure it was scary, but they really were just trying to help you.

Username, I apologize for having to leave the above portion of this post in your thread.  But I hope this is better than having to wade through a bunch of OT posts.

I hope you find the right med and one that works well for you.  Whatever that med may be.  I don't have any information or anecdotal information that would be of any help to you.  I personally had a bad reaction to Haldol, but I was very young (teenager) and it was a totally different set of circumstances.  (AKA - not my meds [DUMB DUMB DUMB] and no doctor around)  None of which would apply in your case.  Oh yes, I totally admit to being young and stupid!  I'd like to think I'm a little wiser now, but all I really know is I'm older.

Hope you find something that works well for you.

Maddy.

Hi username

I have been taking generic haloperidol (Haldol is one of the brand names for it - see also Serenace in the uk) for about 5 years on and off. I use it for mania so I don't know if my experience of it will be very useful for you if you are thinking about it for auditory hallucinations and Tourette's, but I can tell you what I think of it.

I take it when I get hypomanic , and it stops it developing into full-on mania very effectively, and it's really good for the associated anxiety and irritability i get with hypomania.  I don't take it all the time, and I take it as part of a cocktail (tegretol, risperdal, epilim). I have never had any TD from it. I take "1.5mg-15mg as needed". My doctor told me it's not a very usual treatment for bipolar any more, but he takes the view that if it works for me and i don't get bad side-effects then i should continue to use it, and kind of save it for when things get bad, to reduce the risk of side-effects.

I have read a lot of stories about haldol where people don't like it too. I am puzzled by these. I guess different people experience it differently... but I have never found that it makes me flat or reduces my quality of life - actually for me i would say it has improved my quality of life in the sense that it has made me less ill and let me live a fuller life (e.g., I have been able to return to studying since i was put on it). I have found that it makes me sleepy though, i should say that, i usually need a nap about an hour or two after i take it, but not a long one.

I notice you study in the uk. I do too. I wouldn't have made it through my BSc without haloperidol. For what it's worth, I recommend talking to your doctor about it. Maybe they will let you try it and see how it goes? I wish you luck with your studies and everything...

I was on Haldol for acute mania. I think 5-20 mg. I'm not sure.

It did work, but not as well as Xanax. I need something to knock me out when I'm manic.

But I liked Haldol becaues it didn't have the depressing zombie effect Zyprexa has on me. Big plus.

Heya,

Haldol and other typicals are good drugs.

Useful drugs.  In the right patients.

Side effects, well, atypicals have them too, just different ones, and to different degrees.

NCC, just what I was thinking. There's a med out there for everyone. At least I hope so. It doesn't really matter if it's a typical or atypical since we all have different bodies and so different reactions

Hi I was on it eighteen years ago to fight acute mania (traumatic brain injury).  Then they said I shouldn't have been on it because I had just been in a relatively looong coma.  It helped me out of a manifestation, whatever.  It's just my brain.

I completely agree about taking what works.  I currently take a low dose of Haldol.  It causes some people to raise their eyebrows and tell me atypical antipsychotics exist.  I have tried everything but Geodon.

Helena,

I can relate to how you feel about Zyprexa.  I hate taking it PRN because if I have to take it I can pretty much kiss my plans for the day goodbye.

Wow, this takes me back.

I'm doing a lot better now, and I have been on Sulpride, clorpromazine and Haldol.

I use the atypicals once and a while to calm me down if I am out of benzos.

My trouble was with OCD and tourettes related panic, depression, general anxiety, and auditory hallucinations.

I am taking a year out from uni and reading up on all sorts of self therapy, included cognitive behavioral therapy and NLP incorporated under hypnosis.  My condition has improved 10 fold since I have started to use the techniques that I have learned in every day life.

The anti-depressant duloxetine (cymbalta) has also really helped me in addition to this.

I am really a diffeferent person from the guy I was when I posted this.

I found Haldol was equally effective as resperidone for my tourettes, - there was really no problem with it.

I think Haldol is awesome.  I use it prn to calm down when I'm all spun up and manic.  It doesn't sedate me or screw with my ability to think straight.  I think I love it!  If you like it, well then, go for it!  In my opinion, haldol is great.
