ree
Seroquel XR is not approved for Bi-Polar Depression, just Schizophrenia. Only regular Seroquel is used for Bi-Polar Depression. But my Doctor gave me Seroquel XR for my Bi-Polar disorder. Should I take it?
crazynotstupid
Seroquel XR is just an extended release form of seroquel, yes? So, no different, they're the same thing. In either case, neither seroquel nor, really, any antipsychotic, in and of itself, is properly used for treating depression. They're more properly used for treating bipolar manias. In conjunction with an antidepressant, oh yeah, they can be great for depression. So there's no problem with taking it, I just wouldn't expect a whole lot of help for your depression. An antidepressant or lamictal would be better for that.
Velvet Elvis
FWIW I found it helpful for depression as well, though I don't really understand why. The atypical APs have such a shotgun effect that they can effectively do a lot of stuff at once, but often with more side effects. Seroquel: anti-depressant, anti-manic, desert topping, floor wax
AirMarshall
Seroquel is a "mood stabilizer". Depression is a mood. Hence, Seroquel may help. I liked Seroquel once I got over the initial dopiness side effects. a.m.
crazynotstupid
OK, I'm going to revise my answer from last night--now that I've had time to do a little research (due todamn dial-up and a stupid ISP I had less than 10 minutes last night). First off one link of many I've checked: http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/25037.php Basically, back in '06 AstraZeneca got seroquel approved for the treatment of bipolar depression. A studey (Bolder, i.e. BipOLar DepRession) showed it to be quite effective. The study, from what I could tell, looks good. There were a couple things I didn't like so much...the study was only 8 weeks, so take that for what it's worth. The doses used were 300 and 600 mg. As the study was only 8 weeks, maybe I shouldn't giggle so much at the phrase "minimal weight gain"... So yeah it can work. Try it. See how it does.
