tiredoftherapy21
I am beyond pissed, and disgusted rght now. MY husband has been in the navy for 4 1/2 years, and he is getting out this november. And I have no problem with that, except for the fact that he doesnt plan on getting a job, and he just wants to go back to his home state and go to college. He has no plan of gettng a job, no plan of health care for me and his 5 month old daughter, who will be 1 year and a month when he gets out! I am so mad, bc my daughter has epilepsy and I have lupus and fibro and we both cant be without health insurance, and he says we can go on the state insurances, but I looked up oklahomas state insurances, and they do not cover my treatments I get for my lupus, and my meds. and I just cant understand how he expects us to afford to get good health insurance(bc we all know my sister is on state insurance and they dont cover practically anything but a physical once a year)....he says we can get blue cross for me, and medicare for cassie, but WHO IS GOING TO PAY FOR THAT? I cant work, physically, and Cassie needs her mom. I am so pissed, I feel like I have been working so hard in this marriage and now he wants to act like he is f***in single!!! I MEAN HE HAS A WIFE AND CHILD. a young daughter, and he wants to say screw me and her, and just go back to school. It wouldnt bother me so much if he would go to work and go to school and at least havea plan to feed me and cassie and take care of us, but he hasnt even thought of us. He told me his goal is to go back to school and he didnt include me or CAssie in the whole scheme of things. I FEEL SO MAD. And so scared, bc now I wont even have coverage for my mental illnesses either. And I cant afford to fork over almost $200 for my meds. This is literally making me sick to my stomach. AirMarshall
Wow, he needs a big mug of reality! Dumped steaming hot on in his lap! He'll have the GI bill to cover some of his school expenses, but if he thinks the State will just hand out medical benefits to his wife & daughter while he is playing BMOC (big man on campus), he's seriously mistaken. They won't let him get away with going to lectures, they will require him to get a job, with no guarantee that you will even qualify for state benefits. I suggest you take a coldly logical approach to this. Sit down and work out a budget for what it will take to make it for the first year. Rent, Food, Gas, Car insurance, meds for you & daughter, scheduled checkups and shots for daughter, scheduled checkups (including all the normal female stuff) & psych med checks, Basic clothing & upkeep allowance. Don't forget to multiply the total by about 30% (Total x 0.30)to cover federal & state taxes. Show him the list and tell him that is how much money he needs to provide as a minimum the first year out. Let us know how it goes. I'm sure others will have more ideas. a.m.
Silver
And I don't know where CHAMPUS/Tricare fit into the COBRA world, but any individual group policy (one that you buy yourself, not that comes as part of your benefits at a large employer) I've seen will exclude pre-existing conditions for some period. In my state, they're allowed to do it for a year. So you would need the policy for a year before it would cover your lupus, etc. I don't know what the student health insurance situation is there. Our larger university's plan does not exclude pre-existing conditions, but it does cap out fairly quickly. AM's dead-on about the Medicaid not kicking in if the parent is a full-time student, at least around here... here you only get Medicaid if you're a pregnant student, and often not even then. AirMarshall
You can expect 120 days of Tricare/Champus coverage after hubbies discharge date. Under COBRA, if you pick up another insurance within 63 days after Tricare coverage ends, that is still considered 'continuous healthcare coverage" and they can't deny benefits for 'preexisting conditions". If you go 64 days after Tricare coverage ends then you are back into healthcare underwriting, and even when you do get insurance you will have to wait typically 1 year before preexisting conditions and meds will be covered. In other words, you will be paying for insurance AND paying for those pdoc visits and meds out of pocket for a year. sucks, yeah. a.m.
Silver
Hey, AM - does that 'continuous coverage' rule still apply if someone goes from Tricare to an individual plan, rather than a large group plan?
AirMarshall
Yes. I was just looking at individual policies yesterday online. They included that statement. Of course the best way to get the correct answer is to see an insurance broker individually, or the broker representing an employer who is hiring you. a.m.

withing
Tell him to grow the fuck up. His first responsibility is to his daughter and her needs, not his whims. I second that. Sounds like he needs someone to hit him with a reality stick.
