best AD for anxiety

Recommended Posts

Does anybody have a opinion on the best or favorite AD for anxiety? I'm trying to treat SAD and OCD anxiety (not depression) and I can't seem to find anything that works besides my Klonopin, which I'm trying not to be 100 percent dependant on. I'm on Zoloft but my anxiety is worsening and I want something different.

I've tried...

Effexor

Wellbutrin

Trazadone

Paxil

Zoloft

I'm actually curious about Lexapro and Cymbalta. Any information on these?

What have you tried? What worked and what didn't?

I tried a few AD and Paxil was the best for me.

But as you probably already know , this can be a lot different from one person to another.

PS: I had terrible PA and a lot of anxiety the first 5 days.

Twitch,

Thanks for the topic. I'm right there with you.

I tried Lexapro years ago for severe, severe anxiety, but I was so messed up at the time that I can't remember why I came off of it.

I'm going to keep this information in my hat. I'd like to get off of the benzos too. I am, in fact, addicted to them although I don't abuse them.

I'm on the look out for any other information that anyone else brings to the table.

Thanks for the topic!

Anticipating,

If you are frustrated with SSRIs and don't want benzos and WB didn't help-

I've heard that the MAOIs are supposed to be really good for anxiety if you can manage the dietary restrictions it requires. I hear there is a new lower dose one that comes in a patch and the food thing isn't as big a deal.( don't quote me on that I could be wrong)

Paxil, Zoloft and Effexor have worked pretty well for my anxiety (Paxil significantly better). Prozac and Lexapro made it much, much worse. I don't think there's an SSRI/SNRI that is the "best" for anxiety, so unfortunately you're going to have to experiment. That said, of that family, Paxil is most often associated with being the most sedating and anxiolytic of the bunch.

I don't know anything about MAOIs, but I've heard also that they can be quite effective. My pdoc also swears that Buspar can be an effective medication despite it's reputation as being placebo. That might be worth a shot.

Lexapro has been the best one for me. Pexeva (Paroxetine) and Zoloft (Sertraline) both made me manic so I couldn't take them anymore. Lexapro has been kind to me...

Good luck with the Lexapro because it worked for me with my depression for just a little while & then crapped out on me completely.

I got along well with Paxil CR, but the difference in the side effects between the 12.5 which wasn't much, and the 25, which was helpful, was way too great. On CR 25 I felt like I was doped the entire day, and my body was tingling and going numb. It did help the anxiety very much though, if you don't have those side effects.

Over the years I have tried lots of SSRIs and Paxil has helped the most. My pdoc put me on Pexeva recently, which he said was an easier to tolerate form of Paxil as far as side effects go. So I am hoping for that. However, nothing has helped completely and I am still working on it. Unfortunetly, trying these meds is the only way and it stinks sometimes. It's worth it when you find the one. Good luck to you.

I have a bunch of anxiety disorders, no depression per se (though the persistence/uncontrollability of my anxiety gets me depressed.)

Wellbutrin made me more anxious. Effexor made me wanna die.

Lexapro, Celexa and Zoloft all cleared my mind beautifully but were very bad for my tummy. I'm ready to try a fourth SSRI and hoping it does the former without the latter.

They also game me anorgasma but testosterone creme cured that, so it's less of a concern.

Wishing you good luck.

ETA: Low dosage of benzos help me greatly with social anxiety, GAD, PTSD. But they barely take the edge off the OCD.

  • 2 weeks later...

I took Paxil CR for awhile and it helped a lot. I'm not sure if you have only had regular Paxil or not. I was on regular paxil for awhile and it was awful for me. Then I tried the CR and suprisingly it was a lot better. Paxil CR was great minus the sexual side effects. I tried the testosterone gel, which counteracted some of the sexual side effects... but I thought it was a pain in the ass to deal with. which led me to switch to something else.

Lexapro did well for me as well... but it became ineffective after about a year.

I hope you find the right one for you.
