GroovyGwen
I AM COMPLETELY FREAKING OUT!!! I knew that lactation is a potential side effect of Risperdal, but I never thought it would happen to me! I didn't know how much it would bother me, but it literally is making me nauseous. THis is completely unacceptable. I have enough body image issues that I don't need to MILK coming out of my TITS too! So I didn't take my .5 dose this morning. And I'm not taking my 2mg night dose. We'll see how it effects me. I'm going to the pdoc on Thursday and I'll tell him then. I'm so bad - dropped out of IOP, now changing meds w/o checking w/ doc... BUT I"M LACTATING! If I get manic in the next few days I'll go back. I can't explain how much this is disturbing me. Please don't think any less of me for having milk come out of me. Y'know how I found out about the lactation side effect? From House, the TV show. He gave it to some patient to induce lactation. And he extracted it from her ankle or something. YICK. I better come to grips with this if I ever want to have kids. BUT ICK. I'm not pregnant and my body shouldn't be pretending it is. FREAKING OUT. Zippy
All I can say is yeah that would freak me out too. What about switching to seroquel?
AirMarshall
Don't worry about freaking out. It's purely hormonal changes triggered by the med. It can even happen to guys, though extremely rare. Your plan sounds fine, let your pdoc know whats going on. I guarantee he has dealt with this before, and will probably take you off Risperdal and substitute something else. best, a.m. p.s. If you do start lactating from your ankle, you probably should call House!
mrsloony
OMG! I totally understand. it happened to me and i was as freaked out as you are- its gross!! I did read a guy posting a really long time ago who had it- as horrible as it was for me, I couldn't imagine how it would make a guy feel. Talk to pdoc about how to taper off it- I don't really know if its something you need to do gradually or not- but to be safe it would be smart to check. It Will go away when you stop!! of all the APs I've tried, risperdol was the only one that caused this so there is hope for you! In the mean time try not to look ,touch ,or squeeze- only makes you that much more grossed out.
confused
Risperadal made me lactate and my periods stopped. The symptoms went away when I stopped taking it. Now, I take abilify and seroquel without that problem.
GroovyGwen
What kind of hormonal changes??? Because I am already a SLAVE to my hormones and menstrual cycle, I don't need anything putting me more out of whack. I don't even take BC pills because it screws with my hormones (kick her in the shins - HA!) although I'm going to give it another shot because ed don't need no baby. Just say NO to baby. I think I'm a little amped. Maybe it's the coffee. We'll see. (dang) Edited April 21, 2015 by GroovyGwen
confused
What kind of hormonal changes??? It can raise prolactin.
GroovyGwen
RISPERDAL and similar medications can raise the blood levels of a hormone known as prolactin, causing a condition known as hyperprdolactinemia. Blood levels of prolactin remain elevated with continued use. Some side effects seen with these medications include the absence of a menstrual period; breasts producing milk; the development of breasts by males; and the inability to achieve an erection. The connection between prolactin levels and side effects is unknown. *shudder* If you don't get your period does that mean you don't ovulate? Probably. It's not like the eggs would just build up and you'd become a salmon with human roe. OK that was gross. OreoKitty
Been there, done that. But the risperdal worked for me for awhile.
GroovyGwen
Just for the record, I didn't take my risperdal for 3 days and subsequently went a little nuts. So I took someThursday morning and felt better - saw doc later that day and he's taking me down. First eliminating the .5 morning dose I was taking, then going to drop me to 1mg at night instead of 2. And it's still happening fyi - In the mean time try not to look ,touch ,or squeeze- only makes you that much more grossed out.Unfortunately, there are reasons why this is not the right option for me. Use your imagination.
jmb252
i had the lactation thing and was able to get it to stop without ditching the risperdal. i was put on anti-lactation stuff (can't remember the names anymore, as it was a few years ago now), which helped. what eventually stopped it was changing other parts of my cocktail. apparently the verapamil i was on for headaches, as well as the lexapro, just joined forces in the prolactin raising fun. each drug by itself didn't make me leak, but the three together was too much for me. now i'm on risp, but not the others and have no problems with lactation. FireBird
I have this problem too but the one that is doing it to me is Invega which I believe is closely related to Risperdal. My periods stopped and my bleeping boob is leaking fluid (probably milk like a cow) Moo!!!!! I pray it is a side effect of the Invega because my psychiatrist said it is and now I have to get off the medicine. I ain't need an anti psychotic anyways. I also take Geodon and I don't think that is the one responsible for this. It is the stupid Invega and I have to slowly get off of it like I said before. I used to be on 9mg of the stuff and so this week I go down to 6mg then the next week I go down to 3mg and then nothing at all! I am glad that I am not the only one with this problem and yes it has me freaking out about it as well. I had my prolactin levels checked and according to the doctor, they are "through the roof!" I better not be pregnant. I look it because I am the fattest person in all the world. The doctor said the prolactin levels are 4-5 times what they should be. It better be the medicine and I better NOT be dying or pregnant. I never had sex so it is impossible to be pregnant. At least that is my hope. Oops! I felt the baby kick! Oh what should I name him? Just kidding. This is such an embarrassing problem though. I mean how many people do you know that their boobs leak fluid? I doubt that I will get crazier off the Invega. The only difference is that I might be getting more than usual thought insertion. That is one of the most annoying symptoms there is! You actually have thoughts that can't possibly be yours! How do they get in your head? I ain't know anything except that I have no brain. I was born brainless!
Guest Guest_Alex_Ch
Hi, Can anybody tell me how fast does the lactation disappears after you stop to take Risperdal? May wife has developed it after 3 weeks of 2 mg dose and she is really disturbed by it. Today is the third day she stopped to take the drug, but the lactation still continues. critical_reflection
I had lactation as a side effect of risperdal for a few months. It's definitely embarrassing and I found it very uncomfortable. However, it went away once I stopped taking the risperdal. If your breasts have grown (mine did) that's probably permanent. Guest_Alex_Ch: From memory it decreased gradually with time. I think it had totally stopped after a few months. Your wife may need to be patient for the next few weeks and months as her body returns to normal. Anelize
Risperdal caused lactation and stopped my periods as well because of the raised prolactin level. I can't take other APs so I'm pretty much stuck with the Risperdal. My doctor put me on Bromocriptine, which is dropping my prolactin levels. The lactation has stopped, but I still haven't had a period since January. I have another prolactin level lab draw next week, so we'll see what's what. I haven't noticed any problems with the Bromocriptine interfering with my meds, either.

Sam Murch
PLZ READ THIS IS AN IMPORTANT DETAIL NOT TO BE IGNORED! it happened to me, years after a hysterectomy. I was surprised to say the least. My OB/GYN was rather shocked that my pdoc didn't order a CT scan. He said it is very important to make sure that I didn't have a tumor in my pituitary gland. Sure glad I had 2 docs looking out for me. It is very serious because risperidal can cause glandular tumors.
Nystagmus
yeah prolactinemia sucks. it gave me gynecomastia (I'm a guy). and the thing that NOBODY mentions, is that prolactinemia causes sexual dysfunction problems even if it doesnt give you manboobs or lactation. It makes me really kind of mad. Nobody warned me of ANY of the side effects I had on my medications and they always started me on high dosages instead of starting me on low ones and building up. And people wonder why some of us are bitter??!
