I have been taking Seroquel for almost a year now and it works GREAT but today I went to my pdoc and he has decided that I need to lose 20 pounds.  I tend to agree, but I like being SANE more than I like being skinny!! ;-)

So anyway, he is phasing me over to abilify because he thinks it will help me to lose weight....  Has anyone else lost weight on Abilify?

Also, can someone tell me what akathesis (or however you spell it) is?  If it's a feeling of slight reslessness solved only by icecream or salty snacks, I may have had it with seroquel!

Has anyone else lost weight on Abilify?

I have actually gained some (~10 pounds in 7 months, dosage 10-15 mg), but I think I'm in the minority. Mind you, I haven't been watching what I eat, it's not "magic" weight gain but I really have been eating more! and more of it junk. It's as if the much desired effect Abilify has had in reducing obsessive thoughts has made it harder for me to stick to resolutions.

I cant say that I've lost weight, but I do experience akathesia.

I just cant sit still for too long- I go to meetings at work and have to get up every 10 minutes or I go mad.

I manage that with propranolol prn.

I hope you have some luck with it!

I switched from 2 mg of Risperdal to 10 mg of Abilify, and I haven't noticed much of a difference.  I do feel more like a zombie, and more out of it on Abilify.  But I haven't had any other side effects, and my sex drive came back as soon as I started it.  I was hoping for some more improvement...now I'm just hoping for the tiredness to wear off.

I found myself running towards the food pantry when I was on it, but hey that's just me.  You could be different.  But I wouldn't suggest taking Phentermine (saw your other thread) with it - it sounds very unhealthy together. I've taken Phentermine before just to lose a 10 lbs and it worked - But I gained it back.  ;)

Lose weight?  Oooooo... *runs to check scale*

Holy crap, I have!  I've lost about 5 pounds in the 2.5 weeks I've been taking it.

Weird.  Of course, I haven't been exercising, so it doesn't look like it.

Now if only it will take care of my moods...

I took Abilify back in the spring and my weight didn't change, though due to EPS I had to stop taking it.

Now I'm considering it again.

Seroquel made me NEED sweets. I've never been a person for candy or chocolate bars, but now I just shove the stuff down my throat. My weight hasn't changed, probably because my Hershey's bars are a "meal" to me.

Abilify was fine except that I felt a weirdness I can't quite explain in any other way besides calling it "weirdness".

Take a beta blocker (I take Inderal) with the atypical so you don't get that damn EPS.

I'm just curious--if seroquel is working good for you, why would you change?  Why not follow a healthy eating program and get some regular exercise instead of mucking around with your regimen instead.  I know that our meds can cause craving for carbs--I have them too.  I gained a significant amount of weight on seroquel (70lbs in 3 years) but I am losing it slowly but surely (15 lbs down now).

I'm care more about my mental health to allow my weight to ruin my physical health, if that makes any sense.  My doctor recommended weight watchers.  That might be an option for you, as well.

YMMV.
