Remeron +wellbutrin

Recommended Posts

I just was wondering if anyone has this med combo..My thought is that it might be the perfect combo..I have been on WB alone and got too jittery. I am on 30mgs of Remeron and find it is too sedating and I have NO libedo..sooo if you combine them they might work well together?? Any thoughts?

I haven't heard of anyone on this combo yet, but ... sure - makes a twisted kind of sense, doesn't it?!

It looks like Remeron triggers your brain to make more norepinephrine, and Wellbutrin blocks reuptake (so your neurons soak in it longer, in Jerod's words).  So it seems like there could be a serious synergistic ANTI-depressant effect if NE is your problem, not just a canceling out of side effects.  According to the aidsmeds drug checker, you may need to reduce your dose of Remeron though, as Wellbutrin inhibits the enzyme that metabolizes it.

See what the pdoc says!

I've been on both - at the same time and alone. I didn't find Remeron to be less sedating when taking with Wellbutrin (though I was taking Wellbutrin in the a.m. and Remeron before bed). I was also taking a lower dose of Remeron (15 mg or less). Remeron is actually more sedating at a lower dose. I don't ever recall having any sexual side effects from it, but again - I was on a lower dose.

The only reason I stopped taking the Remeron was the sugar cravings. I didn't mind the weight gain (it was managable), but I have high cholesterol and a box of Oreos a day probably wasn't helping.

Thank you both so much for your replies..I am scared to give up the Remeron as it is working..sort of. I no longer have the cyclical thoughts, I can sleep, and driving off the Hundv

Well, I think Wellbutrin is one of the few ADs that BPs can take without triggering mania. As long as you don't have serious anxiety issues, it might be a good thing to talk to your pdoc about adding. It's mildly stimulating for some people, so in addition to helping with the libido and/or anorgasmia, it might also help with the grogginess you're getting with the Remeron. It probably won't  help with the sugar cravings - but maybe a little. I also take Adderall, so I think that's why I only gained 10 lbs on Remeron instead of the usual 30-40.

Hi Rein,

Have you tried the older TCA's? Some are sedating like Remeron which I have tried on numerous occasions. I am trying the TCA Trimipramine for my insomnia problems, I have also had a good run with low doses of Amitriptyline(Elavil, Endep), it is a sedative, SRI, NRI & Anxiolytic rolled in to one. I also take an SSRI with them.
