Ophelia
I like Sarah Palin. She has grit. that's great.... if you agree with her politics. if you don't... well... the republicans blindly won you over like they were planning on winning over many who cannot see through all the calculating planning of them picking a woman... LikeMinded
Sorry. Bad joke. Nah, not a bad joke. The following is a bad joke: Sandpaper has grit. That doesn't mean we should elect a presidential ticket that includes sand. EDIT: Also, I happen to like Sarah Palin, at least in terms of personality. She's a fellow snarky smartass. (Okay okay, she, for her age, is attractive, though people have said that about my own 45 year old mother, so I take that bit back.) I just don't like her morally fascist politics and lack of political experience, trying to compare her mayorship of Wasilla (the time we visited Alaska, in 2003, I do believe that was her political job at the time) with Obama's numerous efforts to reshape communities in the Chicago area. Wasilla is a middle-class, "middle-America" (not literally, I mean demographically) town, sort of like where I grew up. I cannot imagine that such an area is too hard to govern (maybe I'll check with our mayor, n

olga
If anyone is interested in reading something written about Palin by a woman who has known her all her life, here it is. (You can google the author---she is who she says she is). But first, here are some points about her: 1) She fired the librarian of the city library when she was mayor because the librarian wouldn't ban certain books that annoyed Ms. Mayor. With community pressure, the librarian was reinstated. How does everyone here at CB feel about censorship? 2) She's in favor of drilling for oil in the National Wildlife Refuge up there in Alaska. 3) She came to a city with no debt, and left it $22 million in the hole. 4) People are afraid of her up there. Do we want someone for VP who makes people afraid to speak out? How do we feel about freedom of speech, campers? Here's the article: About Sarah Palin: A Letter From Anne Kilkenny By admin on Sep 3, 2008 in John McCain What follows is an open letter written by a resident of Wasilla, Alaska named Anne Kilkenny. I am a resident of Wasilla, Alaska. I have known Sarah since 1992. Everyone here knows Sarah, so it is nothing special to say we are on a first-name basis. Our children have attended the same schools. Her father was my child
Caillech
olga, Thank you for that article. She sounds like nothing but bad news. S9: I'm sorry. I didn't realize you were addressing me in the post. I think olga beat me to it. In 1999, or about there I had no idea who George W Bush was. But I knew I didn't like him. Same with Sarah palin. Don't know who she is. But I have a bad feeling about her ability to effectively run a country.

Ophelia
Same with Sarah palin. Don't know who she is. But I have a bad feeling about her ability to effectively run a country. yeah, i didnt really know who Sarah Palin was before this. what you just said, though, reminded me that I did have a prediction years ago... (lol). Obama spoke at the last DNC (as in, 2004)... ya know, the keynote address and everything. no one really knew who he was. right after he spoke, the first thing i said was "omg, he is soooo going to be president one day." I told friends, they cast me aside and everything. i remember bringing it up a good few times in those 4 years before he announced he was running. whenever i would bring him up, ppl would go "who the fuck is barack obama?" lol. then, all of a sudden, these same people claimed that they always know who he was.... douchbags. ppl are funny. anyway, that was kinda off topic, but it just made me think of it.... you know, the not knowing someone at all versus the "omg, i didn't know that i would be right in what i said," shit. ok, i'm done. O:-)
LikeMinded
Ophelia-- For the record, I think it's been on the order of almost a year since I spontaneously made a remark on here regarding sand in bodily orifices. I'm sorry you got offended by my statement earlier in this thread and I wasn't trying to make the remark sexist (trust me, us guys are completely capable of having sand). S9-- Interestingly, about the only thing I like about Palin is her being a smartass. For entertainment purposes. She'd do better as a stand-up comedian than she would as a speaker at the RN... wait, the RNC was a comedy club this year.

With community pressure, the librarian was reinstated. How does everyone here at CB feel about censorship? Demonstrably false. Silver
She did not fire the city librarian. She did request her resignation. Nor did she actually try to ban specific books. She did make inquiries about that. Most of us know you don't mess with librarians... because those sweet librarians become vicious firebreathing demons if you try to ban books. (Said the granddaughter of a librarian.) There was conflict between Palin and the librarian. Knowing small towns, I would venture to guess there's more there than just "refusing to remove books" involved. At the very least, I think some alpha-bitch maneuvers (in the wolf pack sense) were involved. Kilkenny did not say she fired Emmons/Baker, by the way. Read the text carefully. Kilkenny's words are carefully chosen, in the way that words are carefully chosen when one lives in a small town, in a small state, knowing they will be cited back (although she didn't probably anticipate quite THIS much citation!) olga
Censorship is censorship. Don't screw around with my library. Okay, this is the way it was written: While Sarah was Mayor of Wasilla she tried to fire our highly respected City Librarian because the Librarian refused to consider removing from the library some books that Sarah wanted removed. City residents rallied to the defense of the City Librarian and against Palin

Okay, gotcha. I think my "sandy" period was when I was trying to extinguish a flamewar (interestingly, "class D" fires, those caused by metal burning, are generally put out by sand). I probably used the term even earlier around the time I got fired from a job in 2005 (which incidentally, was about the time I joined CB). Also, at the time of initially reading this thread, I was getting done sanding a small carpentry project (with some good 50 grit paper), so it was the first thing that came to mind. Back on topic, as far as Gov. Palin's "book banning" is concerned, I really don't see it as any sort of moral issue that will affect the USA as such. It is simple small-town politics and a bellwether of Palin's "take charge" attitude. While the ability to take charge is essential in the position of the VP, she will need to realize that trying to take charge of 300 million people has many more ramifications than taking charge of 3,000 people. Such takeover goes against the (official) GOP policy of "small government" (should she try to overstep her bounds as VPOTUS should she and McCain be elected). (Not that W wasn't afraid to overstep his bounds, but then again, I have this tiny nagging feeling that the GOP is trying to get past the W era.)
