Should I stop Bupropion?

Recommended Posts

My goal has always been to limit my use of drugs. I try to stick to a low dose and avoid unneeded ones.

Bupropion really didn't directly help the cognitive part of the depression. It really just acted as a big caffeine pill. At the time, that was a good thing. I was straight up using caffeine pills beforehand, but whereas those sometimes made me sick to my stomach, I tolerated the bupropion pretty well in lieu of the caffeine. (After the tremor went away)

The depression only went away once I started Lamictal. Now, I really don't need the energy boost. Fix the depression; fix the fatigue. I have transient side effects from the bupriopion, and unlike the Lamictal, I do occasionally feel drugged. On my stable Lamictal dose, I do not have any side effects from it, and I cannot tell when its effects start or stop.

I'd like to stop taking the bupropion to save money and feel more "normal". (I wouldn't do it w/o consulting a doc first though) I'm just really worried about the withdrawal effects I might have. I can already tell when its time to take my next dose because I get really tired. I don't sleep well without it either.

Have any of you had bupropion withdrawal? What was it like? Was it a huge problem?

If you do not sleep well without a med, I'd think twice about dropping it completely. Too many psych problems are made worse by lack of sleep. However, if your doctor agrees, it might be reasonable to decrease the dosage.

As for myself, I was able to drop to from 300mg/day to 150 mg/day for a week and then to zero. The only problems I had were a matter of accelerating "side effects" so I can't honestly say I had any discontinuation syndrome.

Recently, I didn't get around to mailing in my bupropion renewal script on time and had to stretch out my remaining pills. From 450 mgs/day, I did a few days at 300, then a few days at 150, and then nothing for about 5 days. I had no withdrawal effects. I also take remeron, so sleep is so not an issue.
