It's like this - if I were to sleep without taking either this or an OTC sleep aid, I might sleep for 9 hours tops. When I take Seroquel however, I end up sleeping for 15 hours, sometimes even 17. If I've set an alarm, I'm so groggy and tired when I hear it (even if I've slept a full 8 hours) and if I try to get up my head spins so I lie back down.

Has anyone had this experience? I'm taking 50 mg because 100 mg HAD THE SAME EFFECT. I've been missing classes and such and how I do I tell my teacher, 'well, I'm trying a new medication and it made me sleep for 15 hours. sorry!'

It can actually be less sedating at higher doses, although I'm not sure how high you have to go. If you take it earlier in the evening does it knock you out too quickly? Are you taking it for sleep?

Depending on how much you want your teachers to know, you can tell them just that, and ask them to help you work something out. When I was teaching intro psych some years ago I had a student come to me with the exact same problem, although I think in her case it was Paxil. I was happy to work something out with her, although she wound up dropping the class due to difficulties needing to catch up with other classes.

Does your school have a students with disabilities office? If so, I suggest giving them a call or a visit; they may have some advice on what you can do, including whether it would be helpful to you to seek accommodations. If you do that, it would be a good idea to let your instructors know that you've been having some medical difficulties that are making it difficult for you to make it to class and that you are working on getting accommodations.

You could ask your doctor to consider trying you on another antipsychotic. But they all seem to have a very sedating effect. I don't know what your needs are from medicine, but I can tell you that sedation is minor compared to the possible side effects from antipsychotics. So if you dont absolutely need one, try some other type of med.

Yeah you can just tell your teacher that you are doing your best and get a doctor's note if necessary. I took too much allergy medicine accidentally once and slept through two college exams. My mom came home at noon and had to shake me to get me up. I had to get a doctor's note.

Meds are all about trial and error. It is just the fun of it. ;)

The sleep till next Tuesday side effect wore off for me after about two weeks. Now it's hardly sedating at all. So, yeah, I had that side effect, but it passed. I'm taking 100 mg now, but 25 knocked me out too.

Teachers should be understanding of meds. Could you try taking it earlier in the evening?
