SSRi and anorgasmia

Recommended Posts

I am 10 days on lexapro and my libido is coming back but no ability to orgasm. I am a guy but am interested in anything anyone has to say so ladies if you got it back, please share. I am out of med options so pretty freaked out if cannot get this to work. Anyone who got it back or used something other than wellbutrin to offset the loss of orgasm please share. I cannot tolerate wellbutrin so am feeling pretty screwed....thanks...

I'm never taken Lexapro, but the SSRIs I have taken in which this was a side effect, it didn't go away (except maybe Prozac). Not sure this is recommended practice, but if you skip a day, things seem to work again right away. Assuming you're taking a single daily dose in the morning, if you skip that dose, things should be working by that evening. That's been my experience, anyway. Again... this probably is not recommended - especially on a regular basis, but I'd definitely talk to your pdoc about it.

Good luck!

I got it back after four weeks restarting Paxil. The first time was similar. (I do have to work harder for it though at times.)

Hubby takes effexor, has taken paxil and zoloft before and it always came back for him also. Of course he is a horndog and I don't know if there is such a thing to keep his "down and out".

I know 2 friends on ssri's and their's came back within 4 to 8 weeks with a little more coaxing too.

Good Luck!

PS I have read an article where those who are stable on ssri's skip the friday/saturday dose to be "ready and able" on the weekend. I would assume this means after you have done well on the ssri with no breakthrough symptoms and only having anorgasmia.

"... does it come back in time?"  In time for what? :)

Sorry.  Couldn't help myself.  I'm glad to see you back on the boards Speedy.  Seems like if your libido's coming back after 10 days, it makes sense to hope for more over time.  Now what *I'M* curious about, after reading other answers, is whether or not this skipping a day trick might help with GETTING a libido now and then?  I finish just f-i-n-e, it's the gettin' there that lacks motivation  ;)

Well, I am having a lot of trouble with coming, no trouble at all with libido, unless too much of it is trouble. Overall, it's worth it since I'm not depressed, but it does require a certain zenlike detachment to stop whacking off and get on with the day. Sometimes I can get off if I'm well rested and it's early in the day, but not so often. Maybe a couple of times a week, and formerly I was at once a day, and it didn't take nearly so long.

Speedy,

I am another guy struggling with this issue now.  My pshrink just upped my wellbutrin to 300 mg. and I understand that WB doesn't work for you.

At my pshrink's suggestion, I did try the "drug holiday" several times -- i.e. stopping the lexapro on Friday and then having an orgasm on the weekend.  The orgasms were not as intense as I remember (though memory is fades  ;)

When I was dating my  (now) wife, I had been on 40 mg. lexapro for well over a year and nothing was going to make me come, even after a year of celibacy.

Paxil did not hurt my libido at all, but it made me NUMB as hell.  Reaching orgasm was almost impossible.

Zoloft did not hurt my libido at all, did not make me numb, but made it SLIGHTLY more difficult to achieve orgasm.

Prozac was the opposite.  It did not reduce feeling in my Penis or make it difficult to orgasm.  Achieving an errection however was difficult.  I stopped taking it because of this.

Effexor has a similar sexual side effect profile as sertraline as far as I AM CONCERNED.

The sexual side effects did not get better or worse over time.
