Lexapro And Dopey Feeling

Recommended Posts

I have been on lex for about 2 weeks, and still having some problems communicating (sometimes forget what to say), and concentration and stringing sentences together has not been as sharp. I have not had this side effect with other medications and wondering if it goes away, or is just an effect of the medicine?

Thanks

I'm sorry, I can't help other than to say I've been on Lexapro for about 2 years and I've never had any cognitive or sedation problems. Are you sure it's the lex? Talk to your pdoc.

I sleep more on Lexa-Pro. But it's not anything that's "too much". If it was, I'd tell my P-doc right away, and get another med, instead. I don't like sleeping more, but the drug is so very effective for me, I'd hate to switch drugs right now, if I could help it.

*But your reactions sound a little extreme to me - and if I were you - I guess I'd tell my P-doc. I felt initially more lethargic on Lexa-Pro, (it was definitely noticeable - but it wasn't extreme, and I didn't feel "impaired".)

Some folks probably do have extreme reactions to it. I've read as much. It's your call, whether to ask your P-doc for another med. I'd do it, if I felt really extremely lethargic on it. There are other ADs out there to try, goodness knows.

I had to give Lexa-Pro 4 weeks before I felt like it worked for me at all. I did get frustrated the first few weeks, because it made me more sleepy, but I wasn't feeling any benefit (yet.)

But when it finally kicked in, it really did work well. I still sleep more with Lexa-Pro, than I ever did on other drugs (but again, it's not interfering with my lfe.)

But - everyone is different, and if my reaction had been more extreme, I'd have told my P-doc, and asked to be put on another drug. So ask your P-doc.

Good luck,

- Susan

Were you having difficulty concentrating and communicating before you started the Lexapro? This isn't uncommon in depression or anxiety.

Are you taking other medication along with the Lexapro?

Did your psychiatrist possibly give you a benzodiazepine along with the Lexapro for short-term anxiety management?

edited for clarity

Lexapro makes me sleepier and lazier, but in spite of that, it seems to have positive effects on my mental processes (esp. along with Wellbutrin). My depression used to put me in a "brain fog" state. It was hard to concentrate and just... generally unpleasant to be awake (not that anything wonderful happened when I was asleep).

It's not quite as drastic as I may of made it out to be, but its certainly noticible. On Prozac, Cymbalta and Effexor I was able to communicate intelligently with people for long periods of time without running out of things to say, and on Lexapro it feels more like i'm stoned and calm withough as much desire to speak and be engaged in conversations
