Lexapro and Wellbutrin

Recommended Posts

I know this has been posted before, but I couldn't find it. I'm adding Wellbutrin (150/twice a day) to Lexapro (20/daily). On Lexapro alone (and Seroquel, 100, for sleep, plus 10 mg Elavil for migraine) I'm getting too depressed for my comfort level. I was just on the psych ward in May for 2 weeks and have no desire to go back anytime soon. So, I'm trying to "nip it in the bud," as Barney Fife would say.

In the past I've used Wellbutrin as mono-therapy, and it made me more agressive/angry (don't need any help in that dept.) Today I saw doc, and opted to try it again in conjunction with Lex primarily because I know some of you have success with these two together. I would like to hear about how your experience(s) has been, and any possible s/e's I might not be aware of. I know about the speedy/jittery thing, and it sounds like once my body gets used to the Wellbutrin that will pass. I'm willing to be more annoyed for a few weeks, if the combo will break up this nasty cloud on the horizon. But beside that, I don't know really how these two blend.

Thanks for any info!

[i tried Lexapro a while ago and it really didn't get along with m so I can't comment on that. I'm not clear if you are looking for a comment on the combo or what, so sorry if this is all useless]

I find Wellbutrin helps my depression more than anything else has been able to. SSRIs don't do anything but the Wellbutrin has managed to do something. [Yes I still have my issues, but things have improved from what they used to be]

I thinik it probably helps to some extent witht he concentration issues that come with depression. I find I have issues with that when I *do* get depressed, but I think it would be worse without the Wellbutrin.

I'm still getting shaky at times but I think it's probably a combo of my meds rather than one of them.

So, I don't know. It seems like I'm full of contradictions I guess but it's all true!

I swear! heh.

[oh yeah and basically, give wellbutrin a good go. It's helped.]

Yes, to clarify: I am looking for feedback specifically on the combo; however, all comments on either/or med are welcome. Thanks, Luna...not useless. ;)

Also, has anyone EVER had or heard of heart problems with Wellbutrin?

I took the lexapro/wellbutrin combo. First I was on lexapro alone, but it had side effects such as sleeping 12 hours a day, feeling like a zombie, not wanting to have sex, and gaining weight. Then I added the wellbutrin and it really helped to combat these side effects. I was on the lexapro for anxiety, not depression, and it worked really well for that. I liked the lexapro/wellbutrin combo.

About two years ago I went off of the lexapro so that I could lose the weight. Now I'm just on wellbutrin - it doesn't work very well for anxiety, but it keeps me from sinking into deep depression.

To comment on the heart issue: I have a situation with my heart, and my GP would not let me be on WB XL (300) if he had any inkling that it would be bad for my heart. I read everything I can find about Wellbutrin, and I've only seen that it increases anxiety in some people, and can be taken if you are prone to seizures.

According to the PI sheet, Wellbutrin tended to be slightly more likely (1-2%) to cause arrythmia, hypertension, or tachycardia, than placebo.

Certain TCAs are considered a cardiac risk at higher dosages or in overdosage, but even that's not very common.

While I was on WB, it maybe added 5-10psi systolic to my blood pressure and maybe 10-20 bpm to my heart rate, but nothing far out of the ordinary.

Thank you all, I figure the tightness I feel in my chest is probably due to anxiety. Since ditching Klonopin in the spring, I'm much more prone, obviously, to anxiety and even panicky sensations. I have a bp monitor at home and nothing has changed. So, I'm going to just bite the bullet and see if I can get through the titration period. I want this to work.
