Long-Term Usage of Antidepressants

I'd like to hear from people that have been using antidepressants for a long time-years, or decades. I need to know if they remain effective over the long term. I have read that poopout is extremely common for all antidepressants after a few years. How many people have actually been able to switch antidepressants after one quits working and then does the new one actually work? It seems cross-tolerance would be an issue. I took 5-htp for 2 years and it worked great but then it seemed to stop working. Now I am trying Zoloft but I am concerned that coming off of it will be worse than the original problem. Is the potential benefit going to worth going through withdrawal later? I have read that the withdrawal can be severe. Fortunatly I did not suffer withdrawal from 5-htp, I just relapsed into my natural condition.

I would say to the question of "Is it worth it" has to be tied to your severity of symptoms and quality of life.

I have been on paxil since 95. That is a very long time. I recently tried a few others and it wasn't a good experience for me. Even with the stories of AD's not working the second time around I ended up coming right back to the paxil and it kicked in just fine.

Every persons chemistry and every drug will act/react differently. There is no way to tell what your experience will be.

Also remember those who have had good long term success with them are probably not posting on med forums because they don't need help!

Personally I know quite a few people on ssri's varying from 2 to 10 years who are all doing pretty well.

Good Luck in whatever you decide!

With CC's quote in mind, I have one friend who used Prozac for 13 years before it pooped out, and another friend who has taken Wellbutrin for 7 years and is going strong.

There was a thread on the old board called "Anyone on AD's For More Than 20 Years?" here:

http://www.crazymeds.us/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB...;num=1113925698

Plus there's tons of threads relating to poop out, withdrawl and switching meds scattered all over the SSRI board http://www.crazymeds.us/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=ssri, non-SSRI AD board http://www.crazymeds.us/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=antidep, and the misc. questions board http://www.crazymeds.us/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=miscmeds

As CC said about most of the posts being unhappy people rather than the success stories, I can't read the med boards when I'm feeling fatalistic or paranoid
