BiPolarII and Mid-Life Crisis

Recommended Posts

I'm on 200mg Lamictal and I can't seem to get level and stay there for more than a few weeks.  I'm 47, almost 48.  However, the issues that I'm depressed about now could be just plain old symptoms of mid-life crisis; i.e., what I haven't done that I meant to do, etc.  This is mainly in the relationship area.

I can't tell if I'm really not getting stable on my meds or if I'm just feeling normal mid-life issues.

More meds or more TDoc?  That's the question.

Not knowing much about your sitch, my knee jerk answer is both.  But I fall pretty squarely in the camp of "better living through chemistry" to weather the ups and downs of existence.  From THERE, you can approach the core issues with a clear head.  But that's just the way *I* deal with things.  Others seem to work it from the other end with equal success. ;)

OT, I like Lois McMaster Bujold.  I finished "The Curse of Chalion" and "The Spirit Ring" not long ago (haunting used book stores for escapist fodder).  I really liked the former, especially.

"Life is what happens while you're making other plans."

And that's not a BAD thing, per se.  It's still a life, not the absence of one.  I find myself with a rather Taoist belief system ... find contentment where you are, and you will end up exactly where you're supposed to be.  Then again, I'm still a few years from "mid-life", so what do I know?!  Easy for me to say?

Are you taking an antidepressant in addition to the Lamictal?  I know it has AD properties, but it seems like people often still need both.  I think you should get some tdoc advice.  ::big hug::

I was diagnosed at 40 and thought I was just in an extended mid-life crisis, situational depression, that sort of thing.  I was shocked, but since treatment worked, realized my "crisis" had been going on most of my life.  Yes, I was grieved about all the things I didn't do because I was so depressive and flaky, but I was too depressed and hypo to do anything about it.  Now I can.

Are you still titrating up on lamictal?  200 is just what people usually feel better at.  Seems I've heard some take up to 400.  I just went to 200 for now while I juggle old meds out of the picture.

But you can add an AD too.  I'm going to stay on wellbutrin, though I may end up reducing it some (I'm now on 450 which is the high end).

Been on 200mg for about three months.  I'll see my PDoc on 8Aug, planning to ask for more.  More Lamictal and maybe more meds period.

Thank you all for the input.  I think I was just whining.  But then, everyone needs a hobby.  Right?
