Waking up every hour!

Recommended Posts

I should start by saying that I am currently taking 75 mgs of lamictal in the morning and 300 mgs seroquel and 100 mgs amitriptyline at night. I've been waking up almost every hour for the past 3 or 4 nights. Sometimes I wake up exhausted and can easily fall back to sleep. Other times I am wide awake and can't get back to sleep for hours.

I am seeing my new pdoc on Wednesday and hopefully ditch seroquel and go back on risperdal. Not that risperdal was sedating for me, but it worked better as an AP. I don't want to take much more than 100 mgs amitriptyline due to mania concerns and the fact that I become conditioned to whatever dose I'm on. It no longer helps with sleep.

I try to stay away from ADs (they don't play nicely with my BP) except for wellbutrin, which, of course is not good for insomnia.

When I see my new pdoc I want to be informed. Is there anything that will be sedating, that I won't become conditioned to, that won't send me into mania? Just thought I'd ask what other people's experiences were. Oh yeah, I've already tried trazodone and it didn't work for me.

Are you on the 300mg Seroquel, and still not sleeping?

I'm on 600mg Seroquel, and I sleep like a baby most of the time... I'm not bipolar though, I"m MDD.

Mainly, I want to commiserate. Insomnia SUCKS.

I hope you feel better soon!

Ugh. Been there. Bloody nightmare. Had it with Sulpiride (AP) - get to sleep immediately then wake every hour. Seroquel worked for me to start with, but soon I was up till 5am and that was taking 600mg.

I've started Lithium and have to say that I haven't had to rely on bags of melatonin and Valium to get me to sleep before 2am this week. An amazing feeling as it had got to the point where I needed a relaxation mp3 played TWICE sometimes, along with the melatonin/Valium and oftentimes I'd still be awake at 3 or 4am.

Have you tried Li? Or if it's out of the question, melatonin? I know the latter's not a heavy pharmaceutical cosh, but it worked for my friends with chronic insomnia.

Seroquel at 300mg isn't a whole lotta strong antimanic. Pairing it with more of an AD dose of Lamictal and an AD... I'd be nutty. Lithium, Tegretol, and even Depkote stabilize me. APs, pffft, haven't really been my friends. Sleeping pills, lol, do nothing when not stable. The only real suggestion I can give is to focus on treating the illness. Sleep will follow.

Thanks all!

I have been on lithium before, it worked fairly well. I am just not good with getting blood work done. Our car is unreliable.

Depakote didn't work well for me. I know I'd be allergic to tegretol since I broke out in a hell of a rash on trileptal.

I was on 10 mgs of zyprexa also until my pdoc just up and left the clinic I go to (I posted about it.) He wasn't comfortable giving me a months worth and now I've been unable to get it filled. So I see my new pdoc Wed. so hopefully he will have some ideas. I can't raise the seroquel cuz I have just enough until Wed. Sad situation where I had to count my meds and figure out how to stay out of psychosis myself. Not something I would recommend, but I didn't want to go to the hospital. My gp wouldn't touch my issues either. Can't say I blame her!

I'll bring up melatonin when I see my pdoc. I just have to be sure it's gonna play nice with whatever else he recommends. I know I am keeping the lamictal. It's kept me outta the pit of despair more than once.

Well, thanks again guys. I'll let you know what my new pdoc recommends. I have high hopes for him!

Great. Good luck.

Re: melatonin. It's a supplement so you don't need a prescription. I get it by post here in the UK as we don't sell it but I imagine you can get it from a healthfood shop.
