How should I taper?

Recommended Posts

I was given Xanax to deal with a family death about a month ago. I truly needed it as the estate issues with my family was horrendous. Anyway, for the past month I have been taking xanax sporadically. Sometimes .25mg 4 times a day, sometimes nothing until I needed to get some sleep. Usual I would take 1.5-2 mg at night.

Anyhoo, I want to get off the stuff and im confused about how I should taper. Sence i usualy took the dose at night (and with my relitivly short usage) how should I go about it?

Thanks!

Cory

If I could get some advice without having to do that it would be much preferd. She doesnt do phone advising unless its an emergency. You have to go in and pay the 110$ advising fee.

Do you think I would experience any withdrawal from this? All these stories have me a bit worried, but most seem to be along the line of years. I'm just curious if I'd have an issue getting off after a month.

Thanks!

Well, FWIW, I took 1 mg of Ativan every night (for insomnia) for about two weeks, and I stopped it cold turkey without a problem. Not one single symptom. MAYBE a little rebound insomnia, but nothing horrible. Based on the equivalency chart I use, it looks like you're on a smaller equivalent dose than I was. I don't THINK you'd have a problem if you wanted to cold-turkey d/c. [insert all the obvious disclaimers here - not an MD, not a pdoc, not a tdoc, just a patient]

If you want to be super-safe you can try knocking off your dose by a little at a time, but it's probably okay. Best thing, as PR says, is to consult a doc, but I didn't have a problem (though I was under a pdoc's supervision at the time)

You might like to just reduce the minimum you can cut the tablet in every week so as to withdraw at a pace you feel comfortable with. I massively reduced my benzo intake and take Valium prn now, but did have a look at the Ashton Manual at benzo.org.uk for withdrawal schedules. I have to say it IS for hard-core long-term users who would be withdrawing over several months and switching to Valium to make it easier towards the end so not exactly your category!

Saying that, I doubt you'd need to worry about tolerance tooo much if it's just been a month. At least in the UK, GPs are not recommended to prescribe them for over four weeks, so you should be ok. Tapering slowly is always wise though.
