So I've been dong some homework and I've been thinking that maybe adding Provigil to my already massive regimen may help me with this constant burnt out feeling I have during the day.

Thing is, I'm only getting 4-6 hours of sleep each night. I haven't had a sleep study yet, although I'm also gonna talk to my GP about this too.

Provigil seems like a pretty innocuous drug and both my pdoc and GP are not wanting to add any sleep meds to my cocktail.

Any thoughts, experiences, suggestions?

I took Provigil for a couple years. One nice thing is that it didn't really interfere with my sleep. My pdoc told me that it was the one drug I was on that he could recommend from his own experience--he used it when he went to conferences on the east coast to deal with the time change. I did get a headache the first few days I was on it, but Advil took care of that, and it only was a factor at first.

I also took it for 4-5 years at 200 mg/day most of the time. I have sleep apnea, but I took it as a "mood brightener".

I lurved provigil. I didn't get angry or revved up, I just felt...good.

I only recently had to stop taking it b/c my brain decided it had had enough of a good thing. (I b/c agitated, even on small doses).

I can still use it in very small amounts (50 mg) to try to bring myself out of a deep depression.

But I'll always speak kindly of provigil.

Trying to get rid of the Burnt out feeling is the story of my LIFEEE. I'm always tired and can't seen to shake it. haha I've been on Welbutrin and it worked so well for me! Then I took myself off it and was med free for a year. Then I got psychosis from bad weed and ended up back in the hospital.

I tried Celexa and that worked for like 3 mounths then the confusion was back so now I'm trying Effexor.

Have any of you taken that. What do you think. I'm only unipolar and have MAD. I'm in College and have WAY to much to deal with besides this.

My brother takes it for ADD and doesn't have any side effects. He says it's like taking candy. He does notice a mild improvement in alertness and he has to be careful to take it right away in the morning or he will be up all night. It is quite expensive and many insurance companies balk at covering it.

One thing for sure, all, don't take this if you are an alcoholic/addict. I was prescribed it and could never take it as directed. was up for two days one thing. scary memories of cocaine. and when it wore off, the cravings were horrible. For those who can use 1 a day, go for it. it does work....

I'm with december_brigette. Only I wasn't shaking on the sofa, I was either crying like a baby or so lethargic that getting out of bed & taking a shower felt like completing a triathalon.

Thanks to Provigil I understand why severely depressed people try to kill themselves. When you're so weak that you can't even get out of bed, what's the fucking point of living?

Then again, I'm someone who got more depressed on the SSRIs and the drug that's keeping my GAD in check is a frigging Alzheimer's med, so my experience isn't typical. As was previously stated, it all depends on your particular flavor of MI. Caveat emptor.

my therapist mentioned that she had a few clients take this to combat drowsiness/fatigue from psych meds. she has mentioned it a few times for me, and since i'm seeing a psychiatrist for the first time in about a year and a half this thursday, she wants me to bring it up to the doc.

i kind of LIKE sleeping all day long. and staring at the wall for hours on end. i don't know what i'd do with myself if i actually didn't feel tired all the time.

any more comments on provigil?

ps- my therapist mentioned that this first came out for pilots in one of the world wars who had to fly 24 hr shifts- they'd take this and be awake the whole time.

I've been on provigil for about 4 years. It has a very subtle effect. My pdoc says it helps my mood but it was prescribed (by my previous pdoc) for extreme drowsiness. Most likely that drowsiness was from the topomax I was taking at the time. I now take half the amount of provigil I started with. I can take it fairly late in the day and still not have a problem sleeping. However I've been known to accidentally take it at night, which makes for a fun evening of tossing and turning. As far as side effects, I didn't really notice any when I started on it. I've had some pretty bad anxiety symptoms since starting lithium recently... so I am going to talk to the pdoc this week about going off the provigil maybe.

Regarding WWII, I think your tdoc is thinking of dextroamphetamine, a drug still prescribed to pilots in the airforce (they call them "go pills"). Dex is an amphetamine AKA speed. Provigil works differently than the amphetamines. Speaking as a meth addict (in recovery) I can assure you they are very different-- provigil does not cause a spike in energy the way amphetamines do, nor does it last as long. However, the military is looking into replacing dex with provigil according to wikipedia.

weirdly enough, the med that they say is making me drowsy is Topamax (though I think some of the extreme fatigue is depression-related).

and good thing the military is thinking of replacing the dex with provigil... don't want the military on speed...
