BPCharlotte
I have bought some 5HTP from the internet. (A while ago, not taken any yet) I know *theoretically* about serotonin syndrome. I am on (currently) 100mg sertraline. (not working well enough, feel rotten) I am willing to try whatever right now, I am so deeply fed up. I have a pdoc appt 23rd feb. What I want to know is, how many of you have tried it? Did it make a difference (good or bad)? What do you think? Cheers
Velvet Elvis
Mixing it with an SSRI is begging for serotonin syndrome. Just don't do it.
Guest Guest_SSA_*
If you are that bad I would not self medicate! You need to call for an ER appointment with you doctor or go to an ER! Pleae get professional help!
celestia
Yeah, leave the diagnosis AND treatment up to your pdoc. That's what we pay them for. The problem with depression is that sometimes even in spite of all the best heroic efforts on everyone's part, the depression still doesn't budge. I don't know what you've tried in the past, but let your pdoc decide what the gamut of meds is for you and when to try what and how much. If you feel bad now, it gets exponentially worse when we start taking matters into our own hands. That road is a dead end. Stay med compliant, if you don't have one, get a therapist and let your pdoc decide what changes might need to be made to your cocktail.
BPCharlotte
That's what I thought VE. And why it's been sitting in my medicine cupboard for months. An impulse buy, you know. My hubby was interested in trying it. But hasn't, so you know. The way I see it, it would be a case of desperation trying it, but until I see pdoc I obviously won't. He may well tell me to take 200mg sertraline, it was mentioned at my last appt, so I'll see. It's just that he doesn't seem keen on doing anything and I'm struggling right now. Half the problem in the UK is that unless you're seen to be in SERIOUS trouble, they are reluctant to do squat. Or maybe that's just my experience. I don't come across as being in dire need of anything unless I'm really really far gone, and I don't want to get to that stage. Maybe I'll print out a copy of some of my blog, that would probably help, but I'm worried that it's just too much info at once. I tend to blurb big time when I let myself, which is why I don't at my appt. Once the lid is off, it won't go back in the box. If you know what I mean. Too scary to truly let go. But thanks for confirming what I really know already. I do need telling sometimes!
BPCharlotte
Thanks S9, but the problem really is my lack of faith in my pdoc. I say MY pdoc, the way it works here means I haven't seen one pdoc consistently for years. And so it's like starting from scratch each time, as they each seem to have their own agenda, own opinions, you get the idea. What I'm saying is, it seems to take months if not years to REALLY get a pdoc to stick their neck out and change my meds. Last time I saw (another) new pdoc and he was very resistant to trying anything new, despite my mood swings, despite my history of *possible* bipolar or at the very least recurrent depression. The NHS sucks. Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful that it is there, and that I don't have to choose between my family eating and paying for my meds, it's just that the docs here seem so damned resistant to rocking the boat. I'm frustrated. I need SOMETHING. Sigh... Who really buys this stuff on the net anyway?! Apart from me, that is, impulse buy or not...
scatty
Is there any way to ask for lithium? That's an inexpensive med they may not mind prescribing as an adjunct to an AD. It helps with suicidal urges also. Maybe write out some of your symptoms or print up a few of your posts. That may be easier than getting tongue tied (like I do) at the appointment. What symptoms are most troublesome for you right now? Maybe start a mood journal to see if your moods have a pattern. Here is a good one: Mass General Blank Mood Chart Just print it out and maybe your pdoc can see if you are symptomatic and you'll get a clearer picture of whether you're coming or going, so to speak. Good luck!
null0trooper
I have bought some 5HTP from the internet. (A while ago, not taken any yet) I know *theoretically* about serotonin syndrome. 5HTP with an SSRI is one of the more effective ways to get a first-hand view of serotonin syndrome. Not Recommended. By itself, 5HTP really is better suited to the folks who just have a bit of the blues and need something to hold them over long enough to snap out of it. For major depression, a true placebo might work better and more safely. For me, it worsens some of my symptoms without providing much relief, but that's life.
