papertrees
I'm on 20 mgs of abilify already, and last night I heard things breaking in my room and of course there wasnt anything breaking. And i had a sense, and I heard, something moving in my room. Which was false. Hallucinations again. What med can i add to abilify? Or can raising my dose do the trick? I'm also titrating up on lamictal, on 25 mg now, with 50 mg topamax.
netsavy006
Before I (or others I assume) could make some suggestions, what other medications have you tried with Abilify in the past that have not worked out well?
sky
I'm not sure what your diagnosis is or what other crazymeds you've tried, but in my case I have schizoaffective, depressed. I currently take 30mg of Abilify for my symptoms, but still have breakthrough psychosis issues. I can't take other newer atypical antipsychotics for various reasons (weight gain, prolactin levels, etc), so my pdoc suggested that I take 2.5 - 5mg of Prolixin (fluphenazine) as needed. It's an older antipsychotic that works very quickly. I usually take 5mg when symptoms first start to breakthru and found it to be very helpful and without side effects. papertrees
I've tried invega, risperdal with abilify... I don't want to add a second antipsychotic as much as possible, but what can I do? Do I REALLY have to have two?
scatty
Have you tried lithium or depakote? Maybe an increase in abilify will help. What does your pdoc say?
netsavy006
In that case, increasing the Abilify from 20mg to 30mg may be helpful if you don't want to add a 2nd drug. Also, though I know you fear Zyprexa, that is also an option. Changing over might prevent the breakthrough symptoms. I remember that when I was on Zyprexa in the past, I didn't have problems with psychosis. That is why I have finally taken the plunge to go back on it for the 2nd time. Abilify caused akathisia for me so now I'm working off of it...
graduation day
It's possible you can squeeze a little more effect out of Abilify - the increase from 20 to 25 mg made all the difference for me. Definitely worth trying before moving on to another med.

Do I REALLY have to have two? You don't have to have 2. If you can increase the Abilify just a bit like mentioned to either 25mg or 30mg, you may be able to abate the breakthrough symptoms. Speak to the pdoc and see what he/she says...
blackbird
Haldol's a nice wee med at a baby dose. I got my first 1.5mg dose this morning and forgot all about the nasty nurses for a while...
papertrees
My pdoc increased my abilify from 20mgs to 25mgs. And so far, no more psychosis. It made all the difference, perhaps. Thanks for all the input, guys. My psychosis is generally stress-induced, I'm just worried of any breakthroughs in the future, which is why I posted this thread. scatty
I hope the increase continues to keep the psychosis at bay. It sucks to go through that, I know.
papertrees
thanks. I'm also upping my lamictal to 50mgs starting tomorrow. I hope that help with mood stability..
