netsavy006
Has anyone taken the anti-parkinson medication Cogentin (benztropine) to manage akathisia from an anti-psychotic medication? How did it work for you? What dosage were you on? What side effects did you get? If you had to stop, why? If there's other info you could share about it, please do. Thanks, Andy... frog
I took Cogentin for akathisia caused by Risperidone. I was prescribed 1 tablet twice a day as needed, in 2 mg strength. If I took the Cogentin, it would take 20 minutes for the akathisia to go away. I believe the effect lasted somewhere between 6 and 10 hours, but it could have been between 6 and 8 hours. Fortunately I got off Risperidone within a few weeks, because the Cogentin was making my mouth unbelievably dry! Hope this helps.
nalgas
I took a fairly small amount of Cogentin (I forget exactly what, but I think no more than 1 mg, maybe even .5) to counteract Abilify akathisia. It had zero side effects for me at that dose and definitely helped a decent amount, but it didn't eliminate it entirely, although that may partly be because I had particularly bad akathisia issues at the time. I didn't end up trying a higher dose, because we stopped the Abilify instead, since it wasn't helping me with anything.
