Zoloft headaches?

Recommended Posts

I've been on Zoloft for about 3 months now. I've noticed that now that I'm at 100mg, I'm getting headaches all the time. This would not be so noteworthy, but I NEVER get headaches. Can this be caused by the Zoloft? (P.S. I didn't get headaches at the lower doses).

If I were you, I would cut the dose in half and see if that helps.

IMO, I'm not sure if I would jump into halving your dose until you rule out other possibilities for the headaches and talk to your pdoc. Especially the talking to your pdoc part.

So ABC, I wonder if you'd mind a few questions?

I'm wondering when you upped the dosage to 100mg and what you changed it from (50mg? 75mg? I know that when I worked my dosage up with Sertraline we did it by 25mg) and how soon you noticed the headaches. For instance, if you've been at the higher dosage for more than a few weeks, I doubt that this side effect would have taken that long to show up, if you know what I mean.

Also, you've probably done this, but make sure you go over in your mind any other changes that may have been happening recently-- are you under more stress? getting enough satisfying sleep? drinking enough water? were there any dietary changes? caffeine intake changes- including teas and sodas? do you wear glasses or contacts? sometimes things as simple as these can cause headaches, so I'd just take a good look at everything to make sure it isn't something environmental like that.

I personally never noticed any headache side effects with Sertraline (Zoloft) and I've been taking it since Fall 2006. I started at 25mg and worked my way up to 100mg by the end of the year and sometime in '07 settled at 150mg. Keep in mind I take other meds as well, but I just wanted to share my experience. I did notice that I was tired for a while when changing dosages, but that side effect mostly went away within a month or so of stopping at a dosage-- many side effects are like that, so if you can handle it, it's possible that the headaches will go away with a bit of time, but like I mentioned above, I'd talk to the pdoc and see what they think.

Um, I wouldn't recommend doing that without talking to your pdoc about it first. None of us here know your medication or mental health history to feel comfortable enough to make that call. That's a pretty big drop and if it's working otherwise, you might want to see if there are some ways you can deal with the headaches if they are caused by the Zoloft.

The headaches may or may not be caused by the Zoloft. You live somewhat near where I do, and I'm having an increase of allergy and sinus symptoms now that spring is coming. If you are prone to allergies or sinus trouble, it could be that. It could also be stress, blood pressure, a change in activity your eyesight, or many other things. Headaches are pretty ubiquitous.

The question for me is whether the headaches are tolerable or if you're able to medicate/treat them with OTC stuff so they aren't constantly bothersome. If they are treatable or bearable and Zoloft works, you might want to just treat the headaches and see how it goes. If they are causing you significant distress, call your doc and discuss a possible taper after ruling out other causes.

Side effects like headache can also be transient-- so if you've only been on 100mg for a week or two, the may resolve on their own.

It's worth a call to your doctor, anyway.

Oops, sorry. Yeah, I forgot to say ASK YOUR PDOC if this would be good or not. I had zoloft headaches

and we cut the dose and they went away the next day.
