SashaSue
Seroquel is my perfect, perfect sleep med. It always works, I don't have any next day grogginess or anything from it , it's great. I'm out though, and since it's the weekend, and not an emergency, just left pdoc a message, didn't do all the getting hold of her in an emergency stuff. Anyway, out of Seroquel, thought I'd try Benadryl. It did nothing. I got about 3 hrs. of sleep. Then last night I tried melatonin. It worked, but today I feel wretched. Can't wake up all the way, can't think correctly, all of that. WTF???? I don't think it's med related, as the one time I'd tried melatonin before, about a million years ago, it was just the same. So, I can take barrels of seroquel, no problem at all, boxes of Benadrl, no effects whatsoever. 25 mg. of melatonin, though, and I'm out for the day. Makes no sense to me at all. Artemisia
Melatonin doesn't leave me with a hangover. I'm sorry...

Sasha- Can't help but say the 25mg. dosage of your melatonin may just be the enemy. Just from personal experience, I have never found anything above 6mg to be effective. As a matter of fact such dosages my be counter-productive considering your other meds. Melotonin has many "interactions" with other MI meds, so be careful. Why in the world would anyone for any reason take 25mg? Oh, OK, for sleep! Benedryl is totally ineffecitve for me too. Have you tried trazodone with a bit of benzo? Hope it all works out for you! SashaSue
Thanks Artemisia. I know it's so not supposed to do that, but I was a disaster until midafternoon. Mockery! Deepster- I took 25mg because that's the dosage it came in, and I didn't think to check if that was appropriate or not. Tomorrow I should be able to get my pdoc to call in more seroquel for me, so I'll be sleeping once again. Tonight, however, is a different story altogether. Artemisia
Wow, yes, how did I missed your high dosage?! With melatonin, less is more, it seems. A small MIT study found that melatonin stops being effective past 1 mg. Of course this is ironic, since 1 mg is the absolute lowest dose you can find on the market. Thankfully, the pills can be split, though. I take a yummy orange-flavored sublingual form of melatonin that comes in 1 mg. I don't know if it's the melatonin or the placebo effect from the yummy orangeness, but something works for me.
Deepster
I take 3mg, and that is supposedly the MAXIMUM dosage anyone should take. The bottle that I have just finished even says to take only under the direction of a doctor. Not sure what that's all about, but as I said before, melatonin can react rather strangely with some MI meds. Deepster

Deepster I have absolutely no clue NO clue what the max is for most people (especially those on MI meds) what I do know however is that my son (4 years old) was just recently dx'd as PDD-NOS and he has always had trouble sleeping. His neurologist told me to try Melatonin for him, I had never heard of it before this, but she said to give him between 3 and 9 mg. (start with 3 and work up if it didn't seem to help! It helps him to fall asleep quickly, but he still wakes up frequently through the night, and then seems very groggy the next day and will usually end up taking at least a 4 hour nap the next day (he usually doesn't nap at all!). Not sure if there is a difference between an adult or child using this, just thought I'd give what teeny bit of knoweledge and experience I have with it! ~Jenn
nalgas
I'll jump in on the dosage issue, too. I just saw my sleep doctor at the end of last month, and he said that if I want to try it, I should aim for 1 mg, and he agrees with the study Artemisia found on the mega-doses it's distributed in being kind of ridiculous. I was told that it can be rather hard to find it in that small an amount, though, and that I might have to resort to getting 3 mg pills and splitting them to end up with 1.5, but I haven't gone to the store to see what I can dig up yet. I guess we'll see how that goes if I can actually manage to be up and about during the hours they're open some time this week instead of in the middle of the night. I can't go get my sleep meds because I'm not sleeping right. Go figure.
justweplus3
Well I am gonna have to try this splittin it in half thing for my son!!! I always thought more was better, but apparently not when it comes to Melatonin! Here's to hoping it helps...maybe we can both get a good nights sleep for once! ~Jenn
