Problems with higher dose of Paxil

Recommended Posts

I recently had an increase in my dosage of paxil over the past week from 30 mgs per day up to 40 mgs per day & I just don't think that I can tolerate such a high dosage....especially given what happened yesterday.

Yesterday evening I was supposed to go to a dance hosted by my social group for those with disabilities so I left home to bike up to the designated pick up point for the van pool to the event but by the time I arrived just before the scheduled pick up time I was feeling extremely weak, especially in my extremities as well as extremely nauseated & just had to lay on the ground throwing up uncontrollably.Good thing that some concerned customers at the restaraunt where I was to meet the van pool at called EMT's so I could be checked out & one of them later drove me home when it became obvious that I had missed my ride to the dance(and was in no condition to go anyhow) & couldn't get home by myself in my weakened state. At least I'm feeling better today having only taken 20 mgs last night before bed but am left wondering if this has happened to anyone else?

I do have an appointment with my tdoc tomorrow so I'll be sure to notify her of what happened so that she in turn can notify my pdoc so we can figure out what to do about it & I'll let you know how it all turns out.

so you've been on 30 mg for awhile and now you're moving to 40 mg? (if you haven't been on 30 long and then you're bumping up to 40, you're moving too fast). paxil does have the annoying side effect, in my experience, of muscle fatigue and weakness during exercise. it's very frustrating! i used to play a varsity D1 sport, so i understand. however, i am wondering whether it is possible that you were dehydrated or had low blood sugar and that combined with paxil's effects on your muscles? and is this an isolated incident?

you could try increasing more slowly (30 to 35 for awhile and then to 40). is paxil doing what it is supposed to do for you?

weiiiiiird.....i've never posted as a 'guest' before, but, anyway, i just wanted to add that i am taking 50 mg of paxil....not that that means you can tolerate 40 mg, but my guess is that if you tolerated up to 30, you can probably tolerate more if you titrate slowly enough.

This may have had nothing to do with Paxil. Then again, it may have had a lot to do with Paxil.

No matter what, weakness, fatigue, and throwing up are something you should see your GP about. Soon. Just to be safe.

If it were warmer out, I would bet on it being some sort of heat stroke, but since it was pretty chilly this weekend, I'm not sure.

For some reason this isn't striking me as due to a side effect of Paxil, or at least, only due to a side effect of Paxil.

What gives you the idea that Paxil caused your (very frightening) experience yesterday? I'm not at all trying to be confrontational here, BTW, I'm just a little concerned for you in case there's something else going on.

I'd never had any such problems before taking the increased dose & was feeling relatively fine when I first left the house that afternoon but the further I got the worse the effects became so it had to be from the meds.I had been titrating up slowly with a 30 mg dose the previous week & only went up to 40 mgs last monday but when I got the new script filled on friday the pharmacist must've given me a different version because, prior to that I was simply taking two 20mg pills for the time period instead of the one 40 mg pill I took friday night.

I t alked to my pdoc this morning & she agreed that it was best that I go back down to 20 mgs per day ASAP because,in her opinion based on the information I provided we determined that 40 mgs is simply too much for my system to cope with.

Good, it sounds like you found a working solution. I'm glad your pdoc was amenable. You still might want to put a call in to your gdoc just to let him/her know what happened.

Good idea Susan especially since I ended up feeling sick again this afternoon following my bowling meet, although it wasn't as bad as saturday it still wasn't good.I did a BS test & found it to be low at 80 so perhaps that was responsible for me getting so sick on saturday? Of course such a high dose of paxil does really cause one's appetite to drop off severely & if you're not eating as much as normal it can definitely lead to a drop in blood sugar.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just an update:I went to see my pdoc on monday & told her what's been going on so we're now looking into trying either risperdal or abilify while continuing the current dosage of 20mgs on the paxil. So far I havn't had any more major problems with passing out but my hands are just driving me crazy because they don't feel right temperature wise.I've scheduled an appointment with my neurologist for early next week since my pdoc says it's more of a neuro thing than a direct result of the paxil being increased....but I really don't think that it is.
