Wellbutrin XL stopped working, need replacement

Recommended Posts

I know this question has been posed before...but what is a good replacement for Wellbutrin XL 150 mg? I switched from generic to brand name. That only helped a little. Wellbutrin XL used to work, but now makes me shaky and anxious, yet I'm dependent on the emotional boost it gives me, and the activating properties of it.

First off, I have been on 10 mg Lexapro as my foundation for quite some time and that keeps me stable. But I need an add-on. Some common sense options that I've already tried or considered are...

increasing Lexapro dosage (I just get more side effects and no increased benefit)

an MAOI (I can't get off Lexapro, no really, it's bad)

Wellbutrin IR (does nothing for me, which is weird because I'm very med-sensitive)

Wellbutrin SR (for some reason, not nearly as effective as XL)

adding on Ativan to Wellbutrin XL (not a bad option, does help, although I'm a little hesitant to basically medicate a side effect)

Remeron (way too sedating)

Serzone (too sedating)

Lamictal (made me extremely anxious, although, this was back before I started Lexapro so maybe it's worth a try as an add-on?)

Anyway, chime in ;)

I was also on Lexapro and switched to Prestiq 50 mg. At first I wasn't so sure about it. It felt as if it made me more anxious and it made me nauseous. I've been on it about 4 months now and am more myself then I have been in many years.

I hope this helps and you find something to make you feel better.

Of the options presented, I'd try adding the Ativan or maybe Klonopin. If the Lex and Wellbutrin work and you just need something for the anxiety, it seems like the simplest thing to do with the least risks. Benzos are pretty predictable in how they work, so you're not going to have to monkey around as much with it. I know it's not the best thing to have to medicate side effects, but sometimes it's the best solution. Also with Ativan you'll know within a couple days if it's going to work or not.

Lamictal isn't really an "add-on" medication-- generally you want to get stable on Lamictal first and then add on to that as necessary. If it made you anxious before, it's not all that likely to have much of a different effect this time around even with the Lexapro added.

Speaking of Lamictal, are you MDD or bipolar? If you're bipolar, you might want to look into some sort of mood stabilizer that might help with some of the anxiety. Just an idea.

Good luck, and I hope you get this figured out!

Thanks for the response. Ativan definitely helps. I guess I'm worried about addiction, which is ridiculous since I'm already basically addicted to Lexapro and Wellbutrin XL. I am much worse without either of them.

I have dysthymia, general anxiety, and possibly chronic fatigue.
