Hi All

im just wondering if anyone has a netbook? Im 99.9% sure I will be getting one this week. I currently have a compaq laptop i bought in 2005 and the light in the screen goes in & out. and baby has either pulled off several keys or broken them - most recently the comma key.

the pluses of a netbook for me will be upcoming travels across country...it will be a lot easier to haul around than my current one. and how its supposedly set up to receive wi-fi or whatever it is called these days. and they are cute and i can get cute accessories.

yes reader - you are correct - i know nothing about computers. i like the pretty ones. ;)

size & price are my main issues. i cant afford anything more than $300. it will be easier for me to travel - i have a toddler and will have to travel with all her things.

finding a decent used laptop is something i dont know how to do.

so netbooks - anyone? anyone?

Thanks everyone!!!

SashaSue - per wired magazine - the netbook was created when attempting to come up with a "laptop for every child @ $100."

they are very small and have limited functions. but all i need is the internet - thats why it would be perfect for me. they weigh between 2-3 pounds.

i dont know of any that have phone capability.

so its like a mini laptop. and a lot cheaper than a laptop.

and oh yeah - a lot of them come with linux which- as im sure you know - computer types go ga-ga. im not that advanced and have found some with MS windows XP. hell no to vista.

My friend has a netbook and he adores it, he bought the Acer. He carries his whole office in a small messenger bag. He says the netbook is very fast and does everything he needs it to do. Netbooks are ADORABLE, and I have seen a few that are right at the three hundred dollar price range.

I must be stoopid, but do any of these come with a dvd drive? Or does that make them too bulky, and hence, not a netbook? I only mention, because I'd love to have one for flights, to watch movies.

DVD drives take up an enormous amount of space and battery power (relatively) for something designed to be small, portable, and with long battery life like netbooks generally are. Even if you do get an external one, you're generally better off just using it to copy DVDs to the internal hard drive/SSD and then leaving the DVD drive and discs at home to save battery power and space in your bag. Also, a lack of moving parts is awesome, because the moving parts are usually the things most prone to break, by a wide margin (both internal things like hard drives and DVD drives and external parts like the keyboard).

Hi All:

I finally decided on one and ordered this:

Asus Eee PC 901 Netbook - Intel Atom Processor, Bluetooth, 802.11b/g/n Wireless, 1GB DDR2, 12GB SSD, 8.9" WSVGA, Integrated Webcam, Windows XP Home (Fine Ebony)

$279 on tigerdirect.

whoo hoo - im so excited to have a full keyboard and a screen light that isnt slowly breaking.

6 cell battery.

i'll buy an external dvd drive sometime soon.

the netbook will be here in a few days and im super excited!!!

hey, nice. glad you got it. i was in the computer shop today and saw one on display. they're nice little units. i'd like to have one to watch movies in bed, but since i already have two laptops..... although one is mighty old. hmmm.

it'd be nice to be able to have on you to check email when you're in a hotspot. and now you can. cool. i'm all jealous.

now just keep it out of reach of The Destroyer of Keyboards.

grouse.
