Remeron side effects...?

Recommended Posts

I have never been on this med before. I can't get my scrip filled till tomorrow

and the pdoc diddnt spend much time with me today ;)

Besides the weight gain. Is it likely to increase anxiety

like the SSRI's do?

I am so succeptable to agitation, anxiety, insomnia, racing thoughts

when starting any med. I guess I have sensitive nerves or something...

Hey -

Well, I've been on every therapeutic dose of Remeron that has been tested - I was on 15 for a week, 30 for two months, and 45 for two months and counting.

Some of what you're going to experience will depend on the dose. For instance, if you're starting at 15 mg, you will probably be extremely sleepy and hungry for the first few days. At 30 or 45, the sleepiness will probably be lessened, but will probably still be there.

The sedation is probably the most noticeable side effect, apart from the munchies (which I didn't really have, to be honest. A little bit, but not nearly as much as is hyped up, and I haven't gained much weight).

On the 15 and moving up to the 30, I definitely experienced cognitive side effects. One of them was short term memory problems - for instance, going into the kitchen and forgetting what I had gone for, or starting to say something to someone and forgetting halfway through. Also, a general feeling of dullness and a lot of paraphasia (I would often substitute unrelated words - like "chair" for "heart", and I had a lot of just not being able to find the word I wanted)

I'd say these side effects mostly went away after the first couple of months, and I didn't experience a significant worsening when I moved up to 45.

Umm, let's see. I certainly don't mean to scare you - for myself, I consider Remeron a great med. The side effects were minimal and manageable and it's done some good stuff for me.

As you can see from my dx, I have significant anxiety issues as well, and Remeron has helped with them. I think it did increase my suicidal/self-injury ideation when I was already depressed, but as far as I know, it hasn't done anything bad with my anxiety and it's done a lot of good.

Also, no sexual side effects ;)

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

ETA: I see you're starting on 7.5 mg - at that dose, it'll probably knock you flat, give you a nasty hangover and generally make you feel like a zombie, but all that will pass as you move up and your body adjusts. Where are you titrating up to?

hi icebird,

of course we're all different, but the more activating ssris made me really agitated and anxious too. remeron didn't at all. it did however make me very tired - it slowed me down rather than perked me up. for some folks that's perfect. for me it was too much at any dose. i definitely recommend a decent amount of exercise if you're inclined at all - i gave in to the lethargy/apathy, so the increased appetite caught up with me like nobody's business. i think if i had been more sensible (i don't know if i was capable or not really), the weight gain could have been minimized somewhat.

good luck and i hope it turns out to be just right for you. ;)

yes, the pdoc prescribed more exercise as well. I'm 168 lbs and 5'11 which is far from overweight, but it seems to be a good idea either way.

thnks again everybody...
