ghost_train
While charting my moods, I've noticed that on my cocktail, I still plummet a week before my period, and that I also get menstrually related migraines. While looking up the more common medications used to abort migraine headaches, I noticed there are counterindications with SSRIs because they're tryptans. I've also read that there's evidence that SSRIs can help migraines. I'd rather try something else before resorting to Fiorcet or Fioral...seriously, huge doses of Tylenol or aspirin? Yechh. Anyway, my questions: Do you change your dose just before your period to help with PMDD? Or did your p-doc just bump up your SSRI overall? Does it do anything for your migraines? For my PMDD I take YAZ birth control and honestly it is the best thing for me. I can barely tell when my period is going to start!!!!! I'm not positive if it treats the migraines but I would look into it. YAZ is a godsend for me!!!! The only thing though is that there is no generic and with insurance it costs me $40 a month. But I'd rather pay that for my sanity!!!!

I was on ortho for a long long time - still had serious pms and mood swings. I saw the ad for YAZ and decided to try it and WOW. What a difference!!!! No symptoms whatsoever. Like I said before I rarely know when my period is comming because I am not a mess before and i have NO cramps. I only know when I'm going to have it because it comes when I start the new pack. I would definately reccomend YAZ for treating PMDD. However I think in the info panthlet it says it's for people who need/want birth control and not just the treatment for PMDD alone? Not sure. I would def ask your doctor!!!
celestia
While looking up the more common medications used to abort migraine headaches, I noticed there are counterindications with SSRIs because they're tryptans. The contraindication is Serotonin Syndrome and it's a serious one, but doesn't happen in all cases--for example, mine. I've taken Triptans and SSRIs since the early 90s. I am a hardcore migrainuer (sounds dirty, doesn't it?) SSRIs never made a difference in my headaches, migraine or otherwise. I suppose if your migraines were triggered by tension (the two types of headaches can exist in the same head), and and SSRI worked to destress you, that's getting pretty out there. IMO, you need to seperate the two issues and discuss one with your GYN and the other with a Neurologist. That is a best case scenario if you have insurance that will cover it. If necessary, they can work together to find the best solution for you. I've never heard of an Antidepressant being adjusted to treat migraine or menstrual issues. Most docs have almost moved completely away from any of the fiorocet/fioronol (narcotic/barbituate) drugs because 1. They don't really do shit for migraines, and 2. They are easy to get addicted to and easy to OD on. BTDT. If your headaches are disabling to the point you are having serious quality of life issues, you might want to consider a prophylactic approach with Topamax, Inderal, etc. A neurologist is the best one to get options from. Some GPs are knowledgeable about all this crap, but most really don't have the skills if you have a treatment resistant head. BTW, when I was younger, my headaches and moods both were wicked bad around my period. The called it simply PMS back in those days.
Guest Stprovogirl
Then what do you do if you don't take loads of Tylenol or motrin and don't have fiorinol or fioricet and can't live through the next ten days with a steel pole in your skull?
