Thanks Well from experience the extended release xanax is a great improvement over the immediate release kind. Xanax xr seems to release it perfectly into the system. I'm a klonopin man myself. It's a smoother ride, yeah it can make you flat and depressed (more so than the xanax). But, that's what exercise is for. I also counteract some of the drowsiness with caffeine but generally it's not a good long term thing. Try taking the least amount of benzo, IMO

bruxist
ive tried both Xanax XR and Klonipin. With the ups and downs the key thing to look at with benzos is the half-life or the time it takes half the amount to leave your bloodstream. Klonopin's half life (18-50 hours) is much longer than even Xanax XR's (11-16 hours). for me Xanax felt too druggy and even the XR is too short acting. i agree with icebird that klonopin is "smoother." Benzos made me tired only the first week or so then it went away. like what icebird said, exercise may help with the tiredness.
Deepster
Some people feel that they need nearly instant "zap" effect of Xanax. This may be great in many cases. I have been taking Klonopin for 7-6 years......no more than 1 mg/daily, and have found it to be a wonder drug for me. It levels me out for a long period, yet it is not "immediate" in it's effectiveness. I MUST, MUST, MUST have my one cup 'o heavy jo in the mornings, so I take .5mg w/my coffee, and all evens out w/in about an hour. This may not work for everyone, but it sure does the trick for me. I just find that the all day "level out" of klonopin is best for me as a "maintenance" med for me, and my pdoc agrees. HTH, Deepster

chimpmaster
From experience, I think what works for the individual is the most important factor. It may be the case that klonopin works better for you that xanax xr I personally find diazepam to be very good. Better than standard xanax for me in some ways.
